There you go. Basically none of the questions I threw out can be simply answered.

Most newbies can't afford a new mirrorless camera. Many can't afford a DSLR, either. I don't think it is our place to tell them what to buy. Just suggest they do the research for their needs and budget.

Give that person a lollipop!
It's not our place to tell them what to buy. But we can attempt to explain what they don't know, which is everything, guide them to information, and maybe give them a chance to handle some vintage or even new equipment.

People asking me to recommend a camera from time to time but I never have the answer because I never asked anyone which camera should I buy. I may ask, what this feature for. What does it mean by the camera having this? but I never asked which should I buy. Some of the camera I bought and I liked a lot most people thought it was a stupid choice.

A recent survey (on here) showed that nobody knows what an abacus is so I would hate anybody here trying to show me how to use one.

As said by ImTrying --

Teach them the basics. Let them get the feel of something in their hands. Maybe a couple of somethings.

If only the neighbours daughter had used different words when telling my wife what I suggested!!!!!!

Paul's comment covers that nicely, even here, but 100% for the political scene!!!

Who's Paul ? I was commenting on spelling and using a word incorrectly (although possibly spelt right).

Read it again. That's not what I said. In fact I ask why anyone would start a young person on old technology. Personally I think every one starting out today should start with a mirrorless. But not everyone can afford it.

I did list the four cameras I have grown up with just for your information.

And I suggested that IF you are mentoring a newbie that you might let them try using some of your old equipment just for the hands on experience so they can make a better informed choice when they buy their own.

Why not new?
I doubt that they will want to buy old equipment.
First things first is ask what their budget is.
Good for cameras, cars or houses.
