I have an old Canon PowerShot SX20IS that I used to use before I got my EOS 77D. I recently dug the old SX20IS out and found that it won't power on. I've cleaned out the contacts and used two sets of new batteries to no avail. Just needed an opinion; do I pay to send back for analysis and repair, or write it off and get a newer bridge camera? Thanks for your advice.
Call Canon to confirm; however they would not repair my SX50 a few years back. Powershot models are not made to be repaired, would cost more than they're worth, they don't have the parts etc.
.
Thanks for the quick reply Linda.
Simply select the text "Canon PowerShot SX20IS" and search google. The camera appears to be worth $50 to $75 used. Nothing in digital photography gets fixed for less than $100.

You would get way more improvements with a replacement, even a used newer model.
They may send you a refurbished one but you still have to pay a minimum amount. I did that years ago with a SX60 - everything worked except the connectivity to my phone. I think I paid over $100 to get it fixed and they sent me a refurbished one for the repair price they quoted.
If indeed like me, you have non functioning old cameras... when trying to put them in the trash it is difficult... no-!, impossible to let them drop. So give the camera to a young person along with a $10 small screwdriver set and let them enjoy taking it apart... it dies with dignity and fun for the young.
OK, that is good advice for me to take.. I have an SX50 that dropped and jammed the lens. Time to die sillique from Blade Runner. Modified for the dead camera:
I've... photographed things you people wouldn't believe...
Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion.
My video mode watched Moon-Beams glitter in the dark
Near the Tannhäuser Gates.
All those... images... will be lost in time,
Like tear drops.. in... rain.
Time... to die...

$100 isn't even worth 1hr of the tech let alone the part. If the OP doesn't want to spend money on a new model just buy a used one, chances are it would still work for a long time.

I have an SX710HS that I really like. I'd suggest you look at one of the later versions (720, 730, or 740).

Replace it with something. Time marches on and takes technology with it.
That's how I learned Electronics! Took equipment apart to see how it worked!
