R10 gets her into the future and all lenses will be native and grow with her.
With the 18-150mm gets her in for a little over $1,300 and it is light, hyper fast AF and many pro level features she can grow into for a starter beginner camera price.

Everyone here knows USER ID. He/she gets his/her jollies by being offensive and combative with ridiculous posts containing childish images and insults which he/she deems to be clever. He/she considers himself/herself an Artist but I've seen his/her own work. If you ignore, eventually it goes away.

Personally, I'd go with the T8i.
I'm still using my T1i.

(I don't do the mirrorless hype.)

LOL. If you truly think mirrorless is hype, then you really dont know much about the distinct advantages of mirrorless and haven't used the latest mirrorless from Canon, Nikon, Sony, Fuji, Panasonic.

The friend of the OP can decide whether a good DSLR or good mirrorless suits them best.

Remember this purchase is "to have a camera to grow with", so IMHO the wise move would be going with a fine mirrorless system going forward. There are great choices at all budget levels from many top brands.

There will be better support and more lenses and gear to go with mirrorless cameras in the years ahead. Like it or not , believe it or not, camera makers are slowing down any further releases of new models of DSLRs, retiring some DSLR models and not releasing any new lenses for other DSLR models. Soon parts will be harder to find to repair some older DSLR models. My pro DSLR user friends are finding that happening already, repair shops cant get parts to fix their older pro models of DSLRs anymore.

And BTW Longshadow ,I once owned a Canon T4i and made good shots with it, but my mirrorless gear runs rings around any of those T model DSLRs.

Cheers and best to you.

With a budget of 1K to 1.5K, she will definitely outgrown it.
I suggest a mid range used DSLR with a moderate zoom in the class of a 24-200. Considering her budget that is about all she can get.
Unless you go like a Sony 6500 with a 24-105, but even that is over her budget.
A used D500 with a 24-120 could be in her price range.
A Canon 7ii series with a used lens could be in her price range.
Something she would not outgrow in a mirrorless in her price range does not exist.

I dunno Bill. I have a FF 5D4 Canon and all the appropriate L lenses, but I bought a Fuji for travel and non critical use, and it is just as sophisticated and feature rich (if not more so) than the FF, and the performance/IQ is hard to distinguish from the Ff except in very high ISO shooting. Because of the size and weight, it’s becoming my go to camera and I can’t imagine “outgrowing” it anytime soon - in fact I am adding more lenses. Since you can buy a new X-T3 plus the excellent 18-55 kit lens for $1369 new and ~$1,000 used, I think she could use that camera for a very long time, just adding lenses as new needs arise. I was turned on to Fuji by a friend who is a pro and shoots FF Nikon for work, but a Fuji everywhere else.

I would suggest you and she go to a camera store and take a look at what is available. You may like Canon but she may like the feel of something else. There are any number of excellent cameras these days of all brands.

A couple of years ago I went through the same experience. The end result was the camera I thought was the best was not even close to what my friend wanted.

Sure because you're not your friend. Just like you try to pick a spouse for your friend.

I agree with folks that suggest the new Canon APS-C R line of cameras, or the Fuji or Sony APS-C line.

The friend of the OP doesn't really have to go fullframe to get great image quality , equal or better than what they are getting now with distinct advantages and performance upgrades over any DSLR cameras.

There are many great and affordable choices now in mirrorless which will have the best lenses and best support going forward.

Cheers

Mirrorless itself is not hype, just another technology.
People make the hype by getting all worked up about it.....
Ooh, ooh, ooooh.

So much hype about mirrorless so I'm leaning there but the Canon rebel line has some nice cameras and lenes.

I’m in Europe as I write, doing a Baltic Sea cruise. I have my Nikon D7100 and Tamron 18-400 lens, both of which have given me great service. However, several days ago the shutter broke while in Gdańsk, leaving me with my iPhone as my primary camera, a less-than-ideal solution. The disassembled camera and lens are in my backpack, and it’s heavy! While I’m exploring getting the camera repaired, I’m also going to look at a mirrorless replacement only for the weight savings.

You seem to be the ONLY one getting worked up about it. LOL

The rest of us are just embracing all the new and best technology which doesn't need to be hyped, it is just the new reality. Reality is very different than hype.

Not much weigh savings for the same format MILC vs DSLR - it’s the lenses (which are typically the same) that drives the weight. The weight/size reductions typically require a format reduction. APS-C was as far down as I was willing to go since I shoot a fair amount of relatively high ISO, but lots of folks produce excellent results with M43 or some of the smaller Sonys such as the RX100 series.

Thanks, TriX. I’m a dinosaur and never even handed a mirrorless model, but I’m still gonna check them out.

Not worked up at all.

Nope, I'm not. Just not a subscriber to "the new reality" AKA the wave of the future.
It's just a different camera technology.
Hype, new reality, wave of the future, you, and others as well, can (and will) continue to worship and purport it as the "only way to go". Not I.
You're welcome to your belief, admiration, or being absorbed/engrossed by the new technology.
Just don't tell me I have to get on the band wagon. No interest.

P.S. I really like cell phone cameras too!

Cheers to you as well.

We learn what we want by buying modest things and learning to use them. We study and we experiment as we develop. Then we move up, cautiously, as we learn. She may come to regret the decision you will have made for her as she learns and develops her own style and wants.

No one else can make these developmental decisions for us...not very well, anyway.

I'd tell her to buy a CHEAP used bridge camera, or perhaps a used, very modest DSLR with a single zoom lens (don't start buying lenses for a system you may not want to grow into).

She has to make the big decisions for herself.

Best suggestion in whole thread. These "shopping for a friend" threads are just doomed fools errands. Basically youre bypassing all the "expert" BSing and minimizing the cost. Any endeavor beyond that is just "Pure UHH".

I have a Canon 5D, Mk III (shutter count 7,173) and a 24-105 L 5/4 lens. I would sell both for $1400. If she might be interested in something used, pm me.

I will list these items on the for sale section here in a couple of days.
