Thanks

The beach...

Seriously, Myrtle is so incredibly commercialized and overbuilt, that it is hardly a bird sanctuary. It's worth getting on the web and looking for state and national parks nearby, so you can get away from the rat race.

Huntington Beach State Park is a possibility. It is South of Myrtle Beach, past Surfside, past Garden City, and past Murrells Inlet.

Inland a bit, on the Intracoastal Waterway, is Waccamaw National Wildlife Refuge. It probably has the birds you're looking for.

As Burkphoto mentioned, Huntington Beach State Park. I was there in September of last year. Very interesting area as well. About 1/2 hour away from Myrtle Beach.

About 10 miles south of Myrtle Beach is an area called Surfside Beach. The area is not commercialized, and these are lots of birds and easy access to the beach.

Huntington Beach state park is a must. Loaded with all types of birds.
Also try murrels inlet. Walk the boardwalk and the birds hangout by the water and rest on the pilings. Enjoy. There also a botanical garde on the side oppisite the entrance to HBSP.

I've lived in MB for about 5 yrs now and Huntington Beach State Park, as others have mentioned above, is a must. Further south is a Birds of Prey shelter where injured birds are rehabilitated and kept. MB is on a north/south flyway and depending on when you are in the area there may be some opportunities for migratory birds.

Yes! Take a 30 minute drive to the Twin Lakes of Sunset Beach, NC located on rt 179. There are also small ponds in the golf community of Sea Trail Plantation. The entrance is also along Rt 179. I lived in Sunset Beach for 13 years. Tons of birding opportunities. Another area is Wacatee Zoo, Myrtle Beach. (http://www.waccateezoo.com) It has a rookery - superb photo opportunities. And here's more:https://stepoutside.org/myrtle-beach-sc/bird-watching/

Enjoy your visit to the area.

Yes to Huntington Beach State Park. It may depend on the time of day, but many species abound as well as the resident gator who likes to sun himself on the little island. Park at the end of the causeway and you can easily walk up on a bunch of birds if the timing is right.

I have seen some very good suggestions here for you to check out. Another one would be Brookgreen Gardens which is south of Murrels Inlet on US 17. It across 17 from Huntington Beach State Park.

Yes, I'll second the Sunset Beach area. In fact, the entire Southern coast of NC is full of photo and vacation opportunities. Just get away from the commercialism and pollution of the central Myrtle Beach area. South or North of Myrtle there are more birds and gators.

Consider Brookgreen Gardens, a very large and beautiful statuary garden south of Myrtle Beach.
