I always have a blackrapid strap around my neck in the field, which allows me to have both hands free to grab a lens or whatever without having to set the camera down in the dust or dirt. In the field I've rarely seen a photojournalist without a strap. I'd say almost never. They do it often because they have two or three bodies with different lenses, which need to be accessible, but also to have hands free and clearly because they cannot afford to drop a camera in the middle of a shoot. I guess some amateur guys think straps are for sissies or something. Maybe the color clashes with their outfit...

Just as natural a car seat belt can feel, I'm attached a wrist strap to all four of my cameras. It feels so natural, I can even let the camera hang from my hand, and never fall off.

Alas, one might think I was callous and dismissive of someone else's grief and loss of a friend. Rather, I was only dismissive of the idea that now anyone has editorial authority over the entire covid idea.

It's a good thing you didn't say "I rather shoot Nikon then...."

I will utter no words that offend tender ears and grieving hearts. A little advice, don’t let metaphors offend you. I use OpTech wrist straps for all cameras except when a 100-400 or 150-600 lens is attached. For those two, I switch to a cross body sling that’s attached to the lens tripod ring. Awesome Sunday wishes to all.

Why do people drop their cameras? Because gravity still works?

From time to time people report that they dropped their cameras, causing damage to the camera or lens. Don't they use neck or wrist straps? Failing to use neck or wrist straps seems to me to be like riding in a car without wearing a seatbelt. What am I missing here?

For long carries I use the Nikon strap supplied with the camera. For short carries I just carry the camera by the grip.

In most cases that's a good thing

I always use a neck strap for my Nikon cameras over the years. Also, when I'm having another person take the picture, I place the strap around his/her neck. When you're dealing with a thousand dollar item, better safe than sorry!

So now we are gonna have the great STRAP debate. Perhas folks are getting tired of arguing about filters, shooting raw/jpeg, and post-processing vs. SOOTC and all that old hat!

These are all moot debates because you do what you have to do and use what you need to use as per the job at hand and your own methods and requirements.

As for straps- some folks have better grips on things and good dexterity and some folks are self-admitted klutzes and butterfingers. Not all humans are the same and everyone should protect their equipment as they see fit and are comfortable with.

I don't use a strap in my studio or in some safe locations. Many of my assignments find me atop scaffolding, tall stepladders, and high construction sites and shooting from elevating equipment such as s Sky-Jacks. Neck strap time! I need both hands to operat the camera and maintain balance and a wrist strap won't do the job. If I drop the camera, it will be demolished and what's worse, it may injure or kill some on the ground. The same applies to aerial work from a doorless helicopter or fixed-wing aircraft.

If any of y'all want to be some kinda macho-man and say "who needs any stinking neckstrap" that's your prerogative. otherwise, when there is potential danger - STRAP IN!
So now we are gonna have the great STRAP debate. ... (show quote)

I have to agree with Ed, neck straps have their place and practical use…especially in fast moving construction sites! For example, there are serious “two hand” union and safety rules about climbing ladders and scaffolding…and carrying a camera (in your hands) can be challenging. I’ve shot in these drop/bump prone environments plenty of times…sometimes using two cameras; usually one large one around my neck or “hooked” on my shoulder and a compact one on a wrist strap that can dangle for switching back and forth when I’m in a stable position. Don’t get me wrong, I prefer wrist straps for smaller cameras, but for larger cameras, when not on a construction site), I just wrap the leather neck strap around my wrist an shoot. As I pointed out in another post, cameras can commit 'suicide"…not matter what strap you have, if you don’t use it.

Hope you get better soon. While you're away, look at your immature self and consider resolving to not be triggered by internet banter. Did you see me going berserk reading multiple adults, saying in public, they don't wear their seatbelts. WTF???? Nope, I just let it slide. And, those were (I think) serious statements, not an off-color joke that involved you in no direct way. Do you really wanted to grouped in the same immature cohort as member Jim Bianco?

Thank you, I hope so too. I appreciate all the time you spend giving great information to people asking questions on this forum. I agree with most every piece of advice you give. My message to all was simple: 1. Covid is no joke and
2. Do everything you can to avoid catching it.
