I used to buy DVDs and Blu-rays. Now mostly stream, but often check out discs from the library (both DVDs and Blu-rays). For that reason, I’d suggest finding a player that plays both. Up to you whether to buy a smart player or not.

Any of the name brands should be fine. Sony, Panasonic, Samsung, LG, Toshiba...
https://www.toptenreviews.com/best-dvd-playersSince DVDs are essentially obsolete now, DVD players and burners are very cheap, in both senses of that word. You should be able to get a player for $50 or less.
I think I burned ONE DVD last year, and it looked terrible, so I posted the 4K video on YouTube and let my target audience download it. I can't remember the last time I watched a movie on DVD. It was probably within the last five years, though. We have two really good OLD DVD players, both of which play VHS tapes. One of them records DVDs, too, but the human interface was designed by a moron.
You might also check out DVD players that are DLNA certified which can find and play movies, send, display, or upload photos, fin, send, play, or download music, and send and print photos between compatible network-connected devices. Examples of DLNA in action include: Send audio and video from a mobile device to a DLNA-certified TV.

Today & tomorrow are “Amazon Prime” days. Other retailers are also competing. You should be able to find something reasonably priced during this period.
I have a Sony Blu-Ray player. It cn handle both types of DVD's plus also play CD's. You can use it also go online which I have not decided to do yet. Remember Blu-Ray DVDs are becoming cheaper and better picture quality than the standard DVD movies on the market today.

2Dragons,
Rather than buy a new one with features you may never use, go buy a used one at your local Goodwill store. You can often find great bargains there on used electronics. You should be able to find one that is easy to use with the features you want and at a good price too!

I second that suggestion. I recently bought a Samsung DVD player at Goodwill for $15.00
Work like a charm, remote included. Info on operation (though I don't think you'll need any) can
be found on line.
I have the first blu ray player made by Sony the BDP-S1. I bought it thinking I can play CD with it but no.

I gave away all of my dvd's...don't need dvd's anymore...it's all online now.
The problem is that it isn't all online. If it's not free, then I would have to rent it. If it's not available, then I'm out of luck. I can't believe the trend away from CDs and DVDs. There was talk on TV today about 2001, A Space Odyssey. I can watch that on Amazon - for $3.99. Or, if I had the DVD, I could watch it for free. In my humble opinion, streaming is overrated. I probably have dozens of movies that aren't available for streaming - at any price.
I'd like to thank you all for your varied comments on my DVD player conundrum. I will definitely check to see what Amazon may have on sale for Prime Day. COSTCO and BJ's really didn't have anything I wanted. I'm a big believer in KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid) so, the less expensive choices seem to be the way I'll go.

If you own a dvd movie...it's online...somewhere.
But hey...have at it.
I don't think there are many movies out there I care to see...that I cannot...free.
It's the web...just have to know which strings to pull at.

If you’re used to the quality of 1080P HD TV (or especially 4K), a standard DVD source is going to be a step backward in image quality. I’d definitely recommend a BluRay player. They’re inexpensive (I like the Sony models) and play both Blu Ray and DVDs.

They broadcasted over the air 2001 a space odyssey in 8K in Japan around 2019.
