What is the best lens for my Nikon D200-outdoor family pictures

Hi all. Thanks in advance for reading my post and offering your advice! I have been taking pictures (mostly family portraits & children) as a hobby for a while now, but I'd like to improve the quality of my pictures. I use a 55-200 and I don't like how far back I have to get from my subjects. So, my question is, what is the best lens that offers crisp, clear pictures that allows me to capture an entire family (say, 5 people) without standing so far away? I usually shoot outdoors and we have direct sunlight nearly every day. When I try to shoot in the shade with a flash, I am too far back and the flash doesn't really help. Also, I like to have the background blurred out a bit. Budget is not an issue as I will be renting a lens and just want what is best. Eventually, once I figure out what I'm doing, I'll purchase the right one! Thanks again!

I'll also take advice on lighting. When is the best time to take outdoor portraits and how do you take pictures on sunny days without having your subjects squint? Thanks!!

Nikon 17-55mm F2.8, cracking lens sharp and you get the focal lengths you need just watch the flash has a wide enough spread to light large groups at the wide angle end

Ditto that!
I love the 17-55 on my D200.
