I lost about half my photos in a recent Aperture crash. Is there any way to retrieve them?

What do you have in your back-up files?

I have all my files backed up in the cloud and my original images are available on various media, however they are not retouched and I need to retrieve the retouched versions. Thanks for your help and your always intelligent comments on this site.

I'm not going to claim expertise here, but if Aperture is a "library" as in a single file or even a group of files, that file should be in your back-ups too. Hopefully, available for recovery like any other critical file covered by your back-up strategy and the supporting software implementation of the back-up processing.

You can wait for the right expert to maybe arrive, or begin researching via google like most everyone else will need to do. Example: google aperture library recovery how to

You mention that your photos are backed up in the cloud.
Is your Aperture Library 'referenced', and if so, where are those files?
I'm assuming your Aperture Library is resident on your computer. Do you also back up your Library? And if so, where is it?
Let's start here....

How big is your Aperture Library on your internal hard drive?
Odds are you are importing all files into your Aperture Library and the changes your are making to files are on your computer--inside the Aperture Library.
The 'referenced files' means that the files are located outside of your Aperture Library; on your internal hard drive or on an external drive or location.
One major asset of referencing your files on an external drive is that it does not take up room/space on your internal hard drive.
If this is the case, then your Aperture Library or 'Catalog' has all of the 'adjustments' that you have made to any file. This takes up much less space than having the files and adjustments on your internal drive.
And, if this is the case, you need to back up your Aperture Library on an external drive or cloud as well.
This way, if your internal hdd crashes and is not recoverable; not only will you be able to access your original files--unaltered; but also your Aperture Library with all of the changes to the files.
Two major issues: One, you will need to open your Aperture Library and 'locate' all referenced files.
The 2nd is more important-- you can only use Aperture on a computer that runs Mojave or earlier versions. (Not addressing work arounds though).
So.....back up your files on an external drive for 'speed'. Back up your Aperture Library(ies) on an external drive as well.

Aperture provides several levels of safety. The best of those are the Aperture Vaults. You can create multiple vaults in multiple locations so a single hard drive failure or a disaster at a location can't destroy your library. If you did any of that you are safe. Apple also provides Time machine for general backup, if you backed up your hard drive in time machine, and the Aperture Library is on the main HD then you also should be able to restore your Library.
A similar thing should apply with the cloud.
The beauty of the Vaults is that you can with a single command restore just your Aperture library from the vault.
The vault is actually an exact copy of the Aperture library with a different file name.

If you backed up your whole computer HD on Time Machine, and it is current, and your Aperture Library is on your hard drive you would probably have to do a 'Restore from Time Machine on your HD

If you have time machine connected doing continual in credential backups, it may back up your HD AFTER the Aperture crash. However you should still be able to search back in time machine for a date before the crash and find your Aperture Library backup. The cloud may or may not offer similar services.
I would suggest calling Apple if you are unsure of how to do this. If your ONLY backup is the cloud, it will take a long time, you might see if you can download that backup onto a separate HD so it is stored locally before you call Apple

Glad to hear your files re-appeared. While they are back, it would be a good time to create a local vault on an external HD. It is the easiest & best insurance for your library.
Also if you hold down the Command and Option keys WHILE you are Starting up Aperture, you will be presented with several options to Repair or Rebuild the library----good basic house cleaning to keep things in order.
Good Luck
