I just added my name and shutter count. I've decided to sell the camera for parts only on Ebay, put it up for $200 parts only.

Thank you everyone for your thoughtful and enlightening responses.

Best course of action. It's sad to see an otherwise fine camera die, but it's worse to throw more money into a body than it's now worth.

Paul,

It was a great camera that gave me much photo-fond memories over the last 3 years. I put it up on Ebay for $200 parts-only and just got an offer from a fellow in California for $150 + $10 for shipping. I am going to accept the offer and mail the body off to him today. I've taken over 30k photos (kept around 5k) with this camera and I will miss it.

By the way, I am looking at the Canon r5 or r6 as a replacement for my 6D Mark II and the 70D, as you suggested, and will put my 6D Mark II up for sale first on this site then Ebay if no one here wants it. It has under 10k shutter count, and just looked on Ebay and it should sell for around $1000-1200. I will put it up for $1200 or best offer and see how it goes. If anyone on UHH is interested, please make me an offer.

Thks again for all your help,
Mike Vetrano

The reason to change aspect ratio to say 16x9 it will black out the problem part of the sensor because it will not try to read that area.
Set the Mode Dial to one of the Creative Zone modes.
Press the [ MENU ] button to display the menu screen.
Under the [ ] tab, select [Aspect ratio], then press [ ].
Select the desired aspect ratio, then press [ ] .

If you take a video, using the cameras normal aspect ratio, the shutter will be wide open and you can see if it is a sensor problem.

Shoot in live mode the shutter is wide open.

Try to overexpose or under expose the shot. Also use a long shutter speed. Put the camera to maximum frames per second which should fill up the buffer.

I don’t believe the Canon 70D will change the aspect ratio of the exposure,if I remember correctly they just put a box in the viewfinder as a composition aid and record the entire 3x2 image.

That's the type of Q&A that is easily resolved from going to the EOS 70D User's Manual, page 229 specifically, see "Aspect Ratio".

[quote=r1ch]In his first post he said he tried a different lens and memory card.

A piece of white paper from another sd card could still be in the camera even if another card is used. Don’t know; but my guess-shutter problem.

Thank you.and the manual says.......:

‘Aspect ratios can be set and the JPEGS will be saved at that ratio, while RAW will always be in the 3x2 format.’ Because I shoot in raw, I never used the function. So yes my response was incorrect or at least incomplete.

But while you took the time to look it up, why didn’t you take the time to suggest that the OP could could quickly verify the sensor problem by test shooting in RAW?

As always we rely on those of you that are more knowledgeable to set us straight, that’s what makes UHH such a valuable resource.

You might want to add the new R7 to your list of cameras to consider. For that matter, the R10 too.

Does the R7 have IBIS? It is a crop sensor camera and I think I would want full-frame. Besides being less expensive, what would be the benefits of the R7 over the R5 or R6?

I suspect it’s a $450+ problem repair by Canon. But probably worth the call regardless to get an opinion.

Also, another source is a repair service I’ve used here in Colorado with success, Discount Camera Repair. Rick Riggins is the owner and does his best to keep the fix reasonably priced. Recommended. Worth a call, eves only … 719-219-6884

Wow I did not know discount camera repair was still in business. In I used them years ago. They are great.
