I am experiencing occassional smudging on my Epson P800 printer, but only when using a heavier stock paper - Canson Baryta Photographique II. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

Is there by chance a paper thickness adjustment for the printer?

Look up Jtoolman on Utube. He is an amazing printer guy and specializes in Epson photo printing and also Canon pro printers.

This looks like a serious version of my much smaller ET - 7700. I get smudges on this and have to clear it occasionally. You may be able to clear under the printhead with some kitchen towel and alcohol but there is also a little sponge filled reservoir and if this full the printhead picks up bits from it as it passes over. For my much cheaper model EPSON won't sell me a replacement so I soak it with the alcohol and absorb it with towel.

I'll post a link if you think it'll help.

My Epson all-in-one prints fine on paper, but when I run an envelope through it I get smudges and smears along one edge. Is being caused by the same issue as you spoke about, John N? I would like to see the link you mentioned.

Maybe it's due for a cleaning. It's amazing how much ink gets inside a printer. I think there are cleaning sheets you can run through a printer.

I learned a long time ago to use only Epson papers for my Epson printers. Also, whenever I do get a smudge, I run the clean cycle.
Works..

...look in the printer driver, there is an adjustment, the print head needs to be a certain distance range from the paper. And the jtoolman recommendation is gold...

Also in your menu printer settings, there are designations for the papers being used. The printer is very smart and adjusts for the various differences .
And, read your manual or call Epson tech.

It sounds like it could be head strikes..... with very thick paper there are times when it does not lay flat enough and the print head can actually graze and smudge the inn that has already been laid down.
I use an Epson 5000 and it definitely has platen adjustments for thicker paper. I think the 800 does as well but am not certain. You can also explore a different feed path, like single sheet mode (it feeds the paper straight through the printer)
You should be able to use any paper you want. I am also very fond of baryta coated papers and am using old stocks of Ilford Gold Fiber Silk of which your Canon paper is a near clone. Beautiful Papers, great Gamut.

I cannot be certain that this is your problem, but it really sounds like it is.
Good Luck

There IS a paper thickness adjustment which (I believe) can be made automatically using the proper icc profile and driver. As I really don't use exceptionally thick paper, I have had no problems. Users of Red River Paper ( and probably Epson) will find instructions in every box. It's not a bad idea to read these! Best of luck.

My guess is that the thicker paper is just getting closer to the print heads and more easily 'attracts' smudges, blobs, smears etc. If it's always on one side maybe it's the rollers but here's the link anyway. A no. of items are covered in this link so pick up on the one that interests you.

The AUTHOR goes out of his way to ensure you know this is not an official method. I've done this 3 times on mine with 100% success but the time between cleans is getting less each time. I suspect if you can get the little overflow reservoir part from EPSON you'll do yourself a favour but EPSON U.K. won't supply it. I've thought of taking it out but it has some very fragile looking plastic retainer lugs. Next time I do it (soon) I might try tweezering the sponge pad out of the reservoir. Here's the link.

I only experienced this a couple of times with the P800 and the 3800 before it. In each case I had the wrong paper selected. I only use Epson papers and Epson canvas.

I used to have this problem with my Canon Pro-10 printer until I called them and they talked me through the proper adjustment for thick art papers. I never had a problem with it afterward. I now have the Canon 300 and it has not been a problem with it. Call Epson if you feel you could use some guidance. I'm sure they'll be only too glad to help.
