Oka, I'll say it. I hate 9v batteries! For one thing, they are so uncommon, so I don't keep a supply on hand because they'll be dead by the time I need one. I'm use a Rode mic on a camcorder today, and it has a 9V. I haven't used it a couple of years, but it turns on, and I got a green light. Will it keep working 90 minutes?

I have a couple of infrared thermometers that use those batteries, and getting them in and out is a nuisance. I bought a set of rechargeable 9v batteries from Amazon, but I have so little use for that type of battery that I haven't used them much. I doubt they last as long as conventional batteries. AA and AAA should be the universal standard. And what happened to B batteries?

What about your smoke detectors, Jerry? Ours all use 9V batteries.

I have a Bose radio from 2001, and the tiny battery in the remote still works. That's amazing.

Not my joke; A comedian once said there are no B batteries because if you ask for B batteries the clerk just thinks you stutter.

The biggest gripe I have about 9 volt batteries is the stupid connectors. Who ever thought that up had an evil mind. I always have to use something to pry the connector off the battery and the working space in most devices is too small to make it an easier task.

Do you light candles when you change the batteries in the smoke detector?

Funny you should mention candles. For years, the thing to do when the electricity goes off is to bring out the candles. I've seen many articles telling people not to do this. Candles use an open flame! In the old days, candles were the only form of lighting, and people were used to using them. Today, we have battery power rather than open flames - much safer.

Yes! I should have mentioned that. Some are way too tight, and it's hard to connect and disconnect without breaking something. Then, you have to fit the battery and all that wire into a space that's barely large enough for the battery alone.

Many circuits require more voltage to meet their power requirements, P=VI, it's more economical to raise the voltage than the current. The true working voltage of AA, AAA, C and D batteries is 1.25 volts which would require 8 batteries to reach the same levels of power. Would you prefer a smoke detector that takes one 9v or 8 AAAs? Which would be more economical?

It takes 6 alkaline batteries AAA, AA, C or D to have the same volltage as a 9V alkaline battery. The 9V battery has 6 cells inside. Alkaline batteries are rated at 1.5V per cell not like NiCad or NiMH which are rated at 1.25V. However that the equivalent voltage. The 6 D cells would have a lot more energy in them than the 1 9V battery.

We've got AAA, AA, C, D batteries. Anyone wonder why they don't have 'B' batteries?

When you go into a store and ask for a 'B Battery' people will think you have a speech impediment.
