Some others that I would add: Chill Wills, Walter Brennan, Smiley Burnett. Unforgettable voices.

Such a great show. Ya gotta love a gunslinger who carries a business card and dresses in black. Now, Bat Masterson (Gene Barry) also dressed cool but he just looked like a "western dandy" and you know he wasn't the soft spoken bad ass Paladin was.

There was also a western show that had Richard Boone playing Heck Ramsey, an older, wiser curmudgeon, also I think Harry Morgan was in it. Some said Ramsey was rumored to be Paladin at an older age. ?????

I believe Hec Ramsey was a detective at the turn of the 20th Century. It had an "all-star" cast of characters, including Harry Morgan, Rick Lenz, and Perry Lopez. Most of the supporting cast were actors whom you recognized by face, if not by name.

Interesting list…sort of…. but where’s Tom Mix? Jack Palance? Sam Eliot? James Arness? And those I’ve forgotten?

I always liked the character actors that added so much color and authenticity to the westerns. The leading men were always too good looking and neat to be believable.

Stan

Like all such exercises, the outcome depends on what criteria you choose to measure, and how you choose to weight those criteria. Lists of best places to live, worst places to live, healthiest places to live, best universities, etc. all give the appearance of objectivity, while in truth they're highly subjective.

Interesting list.

I remember something Jack Elam said at an Academy Awards ceremony (or something).

An actor has five stages to his career.
1. Who's Jack Elam?
2. Get me Jack Elam.
3. Get me a Jack Elam type.
4. Get me a young Jack Elam.
5. Who's Jack Elam?

I think that's why I was never successful in movies.

I know what you mean. In the 1940s and 50s, everything was clean and beautiful. A few years later, they went in the opposite direction - to disgusting.

It is indeed an incomplete list, many greats missing.
