Please critique/advice: does the "wandering couple" in the middle of the photo cause enough distraction to warrant its removal? If so, what is the best way to remove and fill in the void? Will content award in CS5 do a good enough job for this?

To me, one of the fascinations of this photo is that you have two sets of people, each one paying attention to something different. Is there a kid standing right behind the man who is looking in the window. I find this photo really interesting (and I don't mean "interesting" in the sense of something one says when one doesn't want to offend). The composition is intriguing and unusual. I don't like looking at photos which, no matter how technically accomplished they may be, give me the feeling that I have seen it before. This one is fresh, and it captures me.

It would only be distracting to me, if your intent was to focus on the Mom and boy in the foreground... BECAUSE, the other couple doesn't add anything to the emotion of the shot.

However, If the photo is to show what was happening at that moment in time, at that particular place and your focus was to be the location and not the people... I'd say leave as is, because that's what the place looked like when you were there.

It's a pretty street scene, warm and friendly. The two sets of people milling about on their own, individual paths of life there add to the ambiance of that scene.

See what I mean? There are at LEAST three different aspects to the photo which can be the focus. Pick which one you want and edit accordingly... or if you like them all present... then no edit necessary, imo :)

10 seconds later the couple walking would have gone out of the frame and would have improved it very slightly. The arch used as a frame was great. Good picture and a treasured memory no doubt.

Great shot! I like this just as it is. How do we know that all 4 persons are not interconnected? I get the feeling there is a complicated story going on here, and I want to know more from each of them. This is great stuff!

I think the couple in the middle add interest, and helps draw the eye through the image. I love the way the photo is framed by the arch. If anything, the couple in the lower left distract my attention from what I believe is the point of interest, the balcony.

If you use Lightroom, I'd bump up the recovery slider a little or use the graduated filter from the bottom to reduce some of the glare on the sidewalk.

Nice shot.

Unless your shooting film & $ a factor - always shoot as many as you can justify once set up, a few seconds may have given another feeling. Very good capture.

I like the picture but would have liked to see more shots of the same place. Less people or even no people. Never the less it is a good shot in its own right. gooe work.

Thank you all for the comments. This was my first post in critique and advice and I have learned much. Photo was taken in Old Town, Annecy, France. I liked the arch as frame and the mother/son interaction. However, it is wonderful how many different people looking as same photo can have all different reactions. I posted my second post "Nude Skin Softening" a few minutes. Please C&A.

The arch DOES frame the scene beautifully... but oddly enough, because you asked us to make judgment on the couple in the photo, my eye didn't notice the frame until after I satisfied your question! It makes the photo, for me.
