I think you will like it. Don't currently own one, did try one out (friend's) and I thought it fine, and very versatile. Do own several diff. mount versions of their 18-270 and 18/28-300 VC's (and older non VC versions), like them. They (stabilized versions) hold their own against my Nikon/Canon/Sony/Sigma superzooms. I think that any lens offering a 22.2 to 1 wide to tele capability might have a soft spot/range, but when properly stabilized, you can work wonders with them. As long as your technique is adjusted for the capabilities of this lens, I think you will be quite happy with it.

If you are expecting to snap away without a care and yield razor sharp shots beyond 300mm, maybe not. It will make great shots beyond 300mm, but you will have to work a bit harder (stabilized shots/bracing/resting against something firm) - at least that was my exp. (I am over 70 and not as steady as I once was). I do plan to pick one up for my own use...but my wife says I need to sell some others so there is room in/on my camera armoirs and shelves....so I need to do that first!!!! Tamron's VC is quite good, I can shoot one handed with my D7200/18-270 and yield sharp images, so have fun!!!

Thanks for the information and I will have fun.

I bought one and use it on a Nikon D7100 for the very same reason - to take traveling and not be changing lenses. I do a lot of birds and zoom shots and I have a very good 70-300 lens, but when traveling I'm also doing landscapes and shots where you need a wider angle. So I probably use it 90% of the time now, and love it.

I bought mine used from KEH three years ago. It stays on my D7200 all day every day. My only complaint at this time is the barrel creep when pointing it down. As I understand this is mostly normal, some would suggest a rubber wrist band from an organization like Alzheimers. Not sure what it costs to repair and if is lasts if repaired.

The 18-270 Tamron models (and a couple others) had an adjustment screw/slide glide zoom bushing under the zoom rubber (facing the bottom, usually a spot of tape over the access hole, if memory serves) that would fix the "zoom lock-up" problem and also could be utilized to eleminate lens creep....I don't have access to an 18-400 now to look at, but perhaps someone else has, and will take a look on the 18-400 (just remove the rubber carefully and don't stretch it, will go back on without issue). Not all of their lenses had that (easy access bushing), but on those that do, a little adjustment and some locktite and you have smooth zoom and no creep.

I've had the 18-400mm Tamron lens for about 4 years on a Canon 7D Mark ii. I use it about 95% of the time. It is sharp enough to use for photo competitions and win awards. I had been using 18-135mm and a 70-300mm lens. I was loosing shots when traveling to Australia, New Zealand, and Canada because 135mm was too short and then 70mm was not wide enough! I was loosing time and missing shots because I was changing lenses so often. Now, I get most everything with just my Tamron lens.

Our trip to the Yukon and Alaska so much more enjoyable with that Tamron lens!

For more specialized shooting I use a 10-22mm Canon lens and a Canon 100mm macro lens.

Again, that's so great to hear. I too have a fantastic 200-500 5.6 wildlife lens but needed something smaller, lighter and wider and this Tamron seems like it's going to do the job.

I looked and I don't see anything like that on this lens.

Great to hear, that is exactly what I'm trying to avoid......having to carry and change lenses and missing shots.

Absolutely, if this lens is what my UHH family is saying then I have no doughts that it will find a home on my D500.
