I would get him started by learning some basic photography. He then can make a choice of his own when he learns what features are important to him considering the type of photography he will do.
A very good start is the camera suggested by hj.

I would ask if he knows what camera he have in his mind. He might have some lesson in school and know already what he wants.

I recently gave my 15 year old granddaughter a used Sony RX10 M3. It cost a bit more than your $500. I paid around $800 for it. She is thrilled with it. I have the M4 and find that I often prefer it over my other cameras. The lens is wonderful, and I do enjoy the zoom.

Sounds like we are advising what his First Car should be. You know, buy him something that can't be easily destroyed as if he planned on going into a War-Zone as a Journalist Photog.

No war zone - just a teenager zone. If dropped accidently it will not be destroyed. It has a decent zoom and excellent image quality for its sensor size. It has a sequence shooting mode that teens would like and a macro mode better than even the Canon 1X-6X macro lens (the TG-6 goes to 11X). It is not indestructible, but it is very tough. And it is one that a teen can learn photography on without spending $500 (even brand new, not used). Once he gets his "feet wet", he can then decide if he wants something more and how much that will cost. Teens do change their minds, from time to time, as to what they really want.

Oh, I do understand what you are try to accomplish. There is a store nearby me that buys and sells used Camaras and Lenses. He is also Authorized Nikon, Canon dealer as well as Sony. I will Post their Number and You can call them and let them know that Nick told you to call them. All of their used stuff is pretty good and they ship all over the World So Tomorrow call this # 248-623-8990. You can even look at their website and it will list some gear. They are even a Authorized Celestron Telescope Dealer. You could probably get Him into a Canon T3I or a Nikon 5*** series for a reasonable price. Tell them your Son's needs and I promise that they will take care of it. Anything that is used, they will provide a TRUE Shutter Count.

Save a little more and get an Nikon P1000, or a P900.

This is the correct answer! It has a setting just for the moon and he can track a plane as it lands or takes off with it's mighty zoom. It's a bit bulky and he should use a tripod, but if he buys a regular $500 camera, he will be disappointed. Save up and buy the real deal.

He can get a used Nikon Coolpix B700 on ebay in good condition from top rated sellers for between $300-$400. This pic of the moon was taken with it, cropped and tweaked in Photoshop. This is the best pic you can get of the moon in that price range. The camera can also be used in manual mode letting the user select the ISO, shutter speed and aperture. This was shot at full optical zoom (equivalent focal length 1400mm), f5.6, 1/500 sec., iso100. And this camera shoots 4K video as well. Click on download and the + to see fine details.

As a former teenager, I had an Agfa film camera that did not last long until I upgraded. I worked the summer and purchase a Leica III that I could use with my father's lenses. I fully support the purchase of a D300. I have had several and currently use a D500 which I absolutely love. Locally I have rented 300mm and larger lenses. The only problem is that once you use the fancier lenses you will not be happy until you own one.

How many photos of the moon does he plan to take? I would hope he has other interests to make the purchase worthwhile. The above photo was taken with a 400mm at a UVA - Navy game. 72 would go on to play nine years in the NFL.

You could buy him attendance at a workshop teaching the basics of camera operation. His learning there can provide a foundation for his interest in photography.

I would suggest a USED D300 or similar vintage and a few manual focus used lens to cover what he wants to shoot. Add a lower cost PP program and he should be fine for the learning process. No need to buy new or break the bank for a newbee.

Question is how much does the teen know about cameras? You can start off from $500-$5,000 DSLR or Mirrorless
