Wonderful shot. I agree with R.G., lighten the base of the tree just a little

Damn those horizons. At the canyon it would seem an easy task to get a straight horizon. I found that some areas of the opposite rim were, however, not straight and they gave me fits. That is not the case here. I did mess it up, and thank you for pointing it out to me. I'll fix it right away. I did have to move around a little bit to get this tree doing what I wanted and to get the rocks and the small green trees to work together. The end result, though, is pleasing to me. Thank you for your comments and for taking a look.

You did great getting the composition! That’s the significant and the hard part.
Good job.

Having lived in Phoenix for a year, indeed this is the sky blue sky we saw most days. The dry conditions, baked soil of the foreground, is a sharp contrast to Florida where we, in one weekend, can get the equivalent of a full year's Phoenix rainfall.

I really enjoyed my trip out west. It is so different from the east. I think travel is important. It allows people to really understand one another. The concerns of a person who lives in Phoenix are very different than those of a teacher in New Jersey; but we are all in it together and it is good to be able to see all perspectives.

That tree is quite picturesque.

Yes, there were many like it; but that one, twisting and pointing to the sky, was my favorite because I was able to pretty much isolate it from other elements in the compositions. THanks for taking a look and commenting.

A very good point. That would help to isolate the tree further and make it stand out more as the main subject. I like the suggestion.

Erich,
This one image captures so many essential aspects of the desert Southwest!
Nice job!
I agree w/ comments on shadows of the tree.

You clearly had a wonderful trip!

We really had a great time. I had seen the Grand Canyon before; but my wife had not. It was great to be there with her seeing those amazing sights for the first time.

I am already planning another trip out west for next spring. A few of my friends from school have also expressed interest in going along. Could be a real good time once again.
