MP4 conversion to JPG.

I accidentally hit the wrong control button on my Panasonic Lumix GX85 4/3rds camera while on a trip and set it for MP4 video files instead jpg & RAW. I was unable to reset the controls to Factory settings on my trip.

Is there a simple way to convert my MP4 files to jpg using Photoshop ? I can save them as PSD or Tiff when opened in Photoshop.

The photos are mainly family activities and I did make many with my camera set for jpg & Raw before I accidentally changed the setting to MP4 files.

So you took video instead of pictures? You can extract a single frame from a video file but it probably won't look great. To do that, you need to use a video program like iMovie. Why not string the video together and have it as a video?

I have been able to save the files by opening the MP4 file, taking it Photoshop and saving the file as a PSD or tiff file and the quality appears to be decent saved at 300 PPI.

If I make a copy of the file, I can then save it as a jpg.

See sample.

I pause the video at the point I would want to get a still of and do a print screen (screen grab or whatever one wants to call it) and use this capture in PS to crop and save.

There is a free program called "VLC". It is a favorite video player used by videographers. It has a convenient and good quality frame capture tool.

If you shot "HD" video, the frames will generate 2MP image files. If you shot "4K", they will be 8MP and surprisingly useful with good prints to around 11x14, sometimes higher.

I took videos with my Lumix FZ200 which yielded very usable still pics. Panasonic has "Silkypix" software downloadable from their website. I found this was needed to download the video files from the camera and convert from proprietary format to common files like MP4, etc. Had to download from the camera. Instructions guide us from there. If the P&S gave the good results i have then your larger sensor should do fine.

Interesting. I have the ZS100 and the videos from it come out directly as MP4.

If the software you use to save a "frame" from your video creates a .psd or .tiff file in the process and it offers no other choice...save it to your hard-drive and then open it any software like Gimp, for example and then 'export' it with the .jpg suffix
