USFL - United States Football League

Has any UHHers watched some of the USFL (United States Football League) games on TV? The USFL is comprised of 8 teams in 2 divisions, North and South. The USFL inaugural game was on Saturday, April 16, 2022 in Birmingham, AL. The Birmingham stadium was filled to the brink with fans. So far, so good.

For every other game of the USFL being broadcast in the days and weeks following, you look at the stands, and you'd be lucky to see 6 people. On top of that the TV station dubs in artificial sounds to mimic the cheers of a full stadium...gee...wonder why?

I wonder if this league will follow the footsteps of the XFL, which continually (it seems) tries to get its foot in the door of fan's hearts. Failed before! Maybe again.

As to the talent of the players, from my perspective, I see a lot of dropped passes, or quarterback missed throws, and the offensive lines for most of the teams appears like a sieve, giving the quarterback precious little time to throw. For the running game, we see only a few long-gainers.

The one good thing I like about the USFL is the use of the video cameras...they use drone(s) and also an on-field cameraman who gets close ups, who runs onto the field during the non-action and the huddles, and runs off field after the huddle breaks. You can also hear the quarterback in the huddle, giving the next play in football lingo, which neither I nor any normal person can translate!

...but then again, the lack of fans, the almost-empty stands, IMO, spells doom for the fledgling league. I hope I'm wrong.

I don't think any other football league is going to surpass the tried and true formula of the NFL.
I see the USFL failing like the XFL, which is going to try a 2023 comeback.

will

I don't care if football exists and would prefer it didn't.

There is so much "almost made it" talent out there, it doesn't surprise me that the USFL is making a go of it. Sorry, wish them the best, but it is hard to be optimistic. Numbers are usually against success. Everyone would have to be functioning on a fraction of the budget of NFL standards; right down to the water-boys....

Why, does it affect you in some way that it does exist?

Here's my idea for a sub-NFL, yet pro league: teams composed of players who graduated from the major universities. That way, you'd have alumni of Michigan squaring off against those of Ohio State, etc. There would be built in fan bases.

It looks like the USFL is a training camp for the NFL. There may be some undrafted talent the NFL can evaluate.

I don't see how this league can succeed. Low talent level, boring games, and no fans.
