I use one made by Artisan Obscura (available from B&H) that has a small o-ring that prevents any loosening or wobbling. I got the small concave version for my X-Pro3. It works very well and positions my finger in a more comfortable shooting position (I have large hands and it is a small camera). The one downside is the price, I think I paid $30+ for it.

The SONY RX10iv has an old fashioned shutter release button threaded for an old fashioned cable release. I prefer and purchased a mini USB release cable which is also accommodated in a side port (covered when not in use.) I felt that threaded hole in the center of the shutter release button was an invitation for crud to enter the camera's most personal parts so hurried to plug it with a "soft release" button. I feel much better now knowing my skin cells and assorted debris will not be getting inside this remarkable tool. Ever look at the pads on the nose piece of your glasses? Run a wet soapy cloth around the steering wheel? People have also discovered skin cell gunk building up on adjustment wheels on cameras. So the soft release button plugging that hole seems a no-brainer. The "feel" is not that different and I quickly lost notice of any difference.

I love the feel and look of soft shutter releases. I have one my Leica M7 and Canon F1, both film cameras. If your camera has the ability to use one I highly recommend their use. Match Technical makes around 45 different styles and is my brand of choice. B&H carries them all.

Why not just use a Nikon cable release?

I'm interested in the answers to this question. I have diabetes which affects the nerves in my fingers and the "feeling" in my fingertips. I have noticed recently that I have to "search" with my trigger finger to find the shutter button and most recently I'm having to take my eye from the viewfinder to direct my finger to the shutter button. I can hardly wait for what's to come in my future! I was thinking about supergluing a sharp nub of some kind to the button, but this might be a better way??

I use a short Cable release on my D800 and D810 I did have super glue the sliding switch button because it would move and lock the trigger down and in 12 + years I have never used that feature.
Of course I use a tripod 99% of the time.

Hi all,
Generally, I do a little research before I post a question about photo equipment to the UHH forum. This is more like a survey, and apologies in advance if this topic seems mundane. So here goes: Does anyone use a soft (shutter) release button? This is that inexpensive accessory that screws into the shutter release button on most cameras. They look nice and personalized, but since they don’t fit flush to the camera body, and have a wee bit of wobble, they raise a concern. I’m curious if these buttons will or can cause any long term damage to the camera mechanism. (Full disclosure; I have one or two, but I’ve never used them since my “well trained” index finger is so familiar with the feel of my camera buttons already...no real need)

i have been using soft release buttons on my leica m film cameras for a long time , and now on my x100t and leica m8 . i feel they help avoid some camera shake . i use a little loctite on the button to keep it more secure . i have never had any problems .

That would be reeeeeeally awkward. How would that be a soft release button unless you had three hands ?

I’ve used on on every single Fuji I have owned, which is up to 6 now. There are different styles, but I prefer the ones that are a little concave. They have never hurt any of my cameras through years of use. They also come with rubber o-rings to keep them from loosening up.

What modern digital camera are you referring to that has a threaded shutter button?

All Fujifilm cameras do.

It seems like that goes rather well with having an old school shutter speed dial. Likewise the M-Leicas and Nikon Df. All have the threaded button and the dial.

Most of the soft shutter releases screw into the mechanical cable release socket, which few modern cameras have. Most modern cameras use a wired remote release or a wireless release of some sort and have a smooth shutter release button.

HOWEVER, there are soft caps made for that use an adhesive to fasten onto the smooth shutter release buttons typically found on modern cameras.

For example, search for "ProDot". Those adhere to the button and have some texture to make it easier to find.

In fact, here's a link to ProDot being sold at B&H: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/products/soft-shutter-releases/ci/29301/N/3720527312?filters=fct_attachment_5541%3Aadhesive%2Cfct_type_5540%3Asoft-release-buttons

Do not use superglue as stated.
There is a material in a tube that will stick to your button just fine.
It leaves a tactile bump like brail that makes it and other things easily identifiable by touch even in the dark.
My late wife was blind and diabetic and we put it on stove dials and many other things for her.
Really great stuff and doesn't fall off.

Is the product called "Tactile Bump Like Brail in a Tube", or is it something else ?

No. I use a D850 and a D500 neither of which uses the cable release shutter button. But I think I will try to glue, maybe not super glue, one onto the top of the shutter button and see how it works! Thanks for the link!

Why not use a wired or wireless remote shutter release??? If needed, it would be easy to glue your dots to the top of the button - and no possible damage to the camera. The wired version would be used if a hand-held camera; either if on a tripod.
