I have been getting "OS" update available messages quite often, I didn't jump in when Monterey first came out Due to my BigSur update, which took a trip to the Apple store 140mi roundtrip, ( The computer would not restart) They finally got it so the computer would reboot,But my Thunderbolt monitor would not turn on, and a few other problems after many hours and days on the phone with apple support we got the monitor issue fixed, but the were two problems that persisted for 6 weeks, Finally the Apple tech called me and we installed a new unreleased update , that fixed the major of the two problems one persist to this date After working with support for 2 hrs yesterday.

Monterey OS: I opened about this computer clicked on software update searched for 2 hrs. and never found anything. I posted here , no help just the usual!! , tried again the next day same problem, finally called support got a very nice young lady with an accent but she put me through to an advanced Tech, finally restarted in Safe Mode Eureka!!! found and installed Monterey only took about 2 hrs. But the problem of opening folders was still there Click on a folder and it opens on monitor #2 , not the end of the world but aggravating, called support 2 hrs later and no joy, waiting to hear from Apple, if they can find a fix

Despite the Apple fan’s praise that they are rock solid stable, never break, last forever and their support is magical, they have the same issues as every other platform (as your experience attests). I have had three Apple issues over the years and none were ever resolved satisfactorily. I have my flak jacket on

Everything breaks. Frequencies differ from brand to brand. Generally, you get what you pay for, but outliers can poop in the punch bowl now and then.

I had a MacBook Pro with a bad nVidia graphics chip on it. Thousands of folks had that problem. Apple had to fix them all — “free” to users, but costly to nVidia. The fix was motherboard replacement.

OP would do well to research whether the issues are common and have unofficial “out of warranty warranties.”

I suppose you have already tried to open mission control in preferences and unchecked automatically rearrange Spaces based on most recent use and the other one that is when switching to an application...

another supposed fix is do a quick click in the desktop area before clicking Finder will make Finder open on that desktop. Same with a few other apps. Just a quick click on the desktop to "choose" that desktop and then click your app icon.

This and the BigSur are the only issues I have had in 12+ years and this is the only one unresolved.

Not having trouble with apps, only folders, I very seldom use finder.
unchecking the rearrange spaces didn't change anything. just tried it.

I have had my problems in the past also. The biggest one, I had to purchase a new computer. With all the issues I have had, I am running Mac OS High Sierra. I know it is outdated, but so am I!!! LOL. I keep getting emails to install a more advanced program. I keep turning it down, and will continue to do so. I am very satisfied with HS.

I did that with one iMac but when I needed to update to the latest OS I couldn't so I bought a 27" iMac in March of 2019 and I'm keeping the OS up to date.

Weird - I also have a 2017 27" iMac - absolutely no problems installing or running Monterey. Do you have a Fusion drive? They can cause many problems especially if not formatted correctly.

If possible, all fusion drives should be replaced with real SSDs. Biggest performance upgrade you can make.

Yep, it makes a huge difference.

iMacs are not supposed to be upgradeable. But OWC and iFixIt have parts, tools, and videos or guides to help you do it. OWC will do it for a fee, well worth it if you are nervous or fumble-fingered or otherwise unable.
