Hello people, I'm looking to pick up a 2tb external SSD drive to go with my Mac Studio. The prices seem to range kind of widely. Any recommendations? Or ones to avoid? Thanks.
Jim
I have started using a Orico NVME M.2 SSD Enclosure with a Samsung V-NAND 970 EVO Plus M.2 (there is a later model out now.) The enclosure is very small and light, and I think it now also comes in metal with 2 cables UDB3.1 and USB-C.
I always take my laptop on shoots, download pictures daily from camera to laptop then copy from laptop to my external SSD. When I get home, I copy my folders from the M.2 to my tower using the USB-C cable and back the folders up on the network. This basic routine has been working for me with various drives and computers since 2001, and with M.2 drives it is now very quick and fully backed up all along the way. Good luck.

Make sure you know exactly what port you will use for the external hard drive. It looks like Thunderbolt 4 is what you would likely use. See info from Mac Studio below. (I am not a Mac user so pay more attention to what they say!)
https://www.apple.com/mac-studio/specs/?afid=p238%7CskVwkFrhB-dc_mtid_1870765e38482_pcrid_593223762473_pgrid_137245721682_pntwk_g_pchan__pexid_37121462500_&cid=aos-us-kwgo---slid-2B0VG3pz--product-I am a big fan of buying a enclosure case designed and configured for the port (and Mac?) you will use and a SDD that you can easily install in the case yourself. These cases often come with upgraded cables and cool down faster than traditional external SSDs. Using the correct cable is important to get the rated transfer speeds.
I buy my cases and SSDs from NewEgg.

It’s says 16TB drive but I believe it’s just a housing that will support up to a 16TB drive.
How do you come to this determination? I looked on their site, I admit, it's a bit confusing. Does sound too good to be true. If it really is a 16TB drive, worth the risk as long as it doesn't fail, and Amex will protect me for $30 in the worst case.

It looks like this is just a box for holding a customer-supplied SSD. Not bad for 30 bucks if you are, for example, upgrading your internal SSD from 1 TB to 2 TB. You can give the old SSD new life as 1 TB of external storage.
The problem with this one is that it is only compatible with 4 types of storage. Look under the Overview tab and you will see the compatibility.

Why only 2TB if you are using this for permanent storage? Or is it more moving images on a temporary basis.
I use SanDisk 4 TB SSDs when I'm traveling. At home I use spinning disk RAID 5 devices with one backed up to another.
I have had a really small SanDisk 1tb for a while .Any opinions about SanDisk reliability?
There are many reliable SSD drives on the market, all will work.
If you want to maximize Speed, be aware that while all SSD's are fast, some are 2-4 times faster than others in actual use. Check the OWC website, they sell all varieties, including the newest M2 NV Me which are VERY fast with Thunderbolt 4. They have both a good selection and good explanations of the different technologies.

Well, I don't know, maybe I should consider larger. I think I habitually don't buy too large when it comes to hard drives because they continually get cheaper. And so if I were to get a 4 terabyte, by the time I get around to using that second two terabytes I could probably buy that space for half the price.

I agree that this is just an enclosure case. There is no SSD or HDD that comes with it.
And here is info on the cable/connector (However only one cable is shown in the pictures supplied with the case): This case will not support Thunderbolt 4 transfer speeds, just USB speeds. I do not see how this case could hold a 16 TB drive. "Large Capacity" is not specified in the tech specs.
