Agreed, but not entirely sure you can call the X100 range pure RF. My X100v & XPro-3 use a semi-RF system, but not pure in the historic sense. There are others on the site who can give you far better tech detail than I can.

Actually, if you re-read his sentence you’ll note that he refers to X100 as “rangefinder like.”

I also have the X100V and absolutely love this camera. Have the X-T2 as well but find myself using the X100V more and more.

You are 100% correct and I misread his post. Thank you for pointing that out.

Hopefully no harm done.

And agreed re the 100V - it's just such a pleasure to use!

Do people who use Leicas use any other brand and if so, how do they rate the quality of the end result compared to the other brand X cameras in their collection?

End result "quality" isn't really a factor in this matter. I suppose one can argue about one lens better than the other, but there is no special "Leica-film" that would make a difference. However, people imagine all sorts of things that will support their preconceptions and bias.

I have an M3 and use it as my main camera. I find the focusing to be fast an accurate for a manual camera, but it doesn’t come close to today’s auto-focus cameras and focus aids. Compared to other rangefinder cameras I have used, including more modern ones like the Bessa R, the build quality and accuracy are exceptional.

For me, it’s a very enjoyable camera to use and I take photos for pleasure.

This site is a little low brow for Leica owners.

From what I have seen of your work it is you that is too highbrow for this sight. All the best.

I use my IIIf about as often as my M6. Gus has my M5 for CLA right now so I’m looking forward to having it back in a few months.

I don't consider myself high or low-brow, and I own and actively and routinely shoot a Leica. Currently I am enrolled in a still-life photography course and I've used the Leica exclusively. Why? I enjoy working with it.

[quote=scubadoc]Very few posts that I’ve seen discuss Leica and very few photos are posted that came from a Leica body. Are there many Leica users out there or do people just collect them to admire their looks, their feel and their ergonomics.

Leicas are expensive to own (not sure why?), and much more so to collect. I believe the Leica thing is just tradition at its best?

Why they are expensive: They are low volume, hand made, and high quality cameras. Using other rangefinders it seems pretty clear to me why they are so expensive.

Are they worth it? Probably not for most people. They are expensive and other cameras take really fantastic photos.

Are they over hyped? Yes. Any camera that people put on a shelf instead of using is over hyped.

Do I enjoy mine? Yes very much.

There are many Leica users on this site. One thing I noticed about photographs made with the Leica from professionals that many of them are very good but few are very sharp.

You think there may be a reason for it ?

I use my Leica about as much as I use my Nikon. I posted a photo here a few months back taken with my SL: https://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-729414-1.html#12937005

I also have some Leica lenses which I use more frequently than the camera. A favorite is to put my 90mm macro-Elmar on my Fuji X-T2 and photograph in the garden. https://photojoes.net/tomatos.jpg

Given the quality of Leica glass, I can’t imagine it is the fault of the camera/lens. Too many other variables come into play that could degrade overall “sharpness”.

Manual focus is the biggest factor: great glass and old eyes do not go well together without autofocus.

M Leicas focus the same for young and old eyes alike. Thaz why theyre Leicas. For film there was no alternative. For digital, the focus magnifier is waaaaay more accurate, young eyes or old.

Ah yes, that famous religious adherence to perfect sharpness required to a great photo...

.................................

I'd bet a very large portion of people on this site would have a hard time taking a sharp photo without modern auto-focus AND composing well, AND mastering all the other aspects of creating an image simultaneously.

We have entirely too many ideally-sharp, perfectly processed yet worthless images.

Been browsing the UHH Gallery again ?
I feel your pain ... or is it nausea ?

BIFS in clear blue skys,
Bugs on bright blossoms,
Sunset and sunrise,
Occasional possums,
These are a few of my
Not favorite things,
These are the pix
Hogville Gallery brings.
