This sounds like a math problem from when I was a kid.

Question 1. If Photographer Joe has a 2TB hard drive, and his camera takes pictures measuring 12K, how many pictures can Photographer Joe fit onto the drive?
Answer: 2 TB = 2,000,000,000 KB / 12 = 166,666,666.6666667

Question 2. How many Nikon D850 cameras would Photographer Joe have to buy in order to take 166,666,666.6666667 pictures?"
Answer: 166,666,666.6666667 / 200,000 = 834

Question 3. At about $3,000 each, how much will Photographer Joe have to spend on cameras?
Answer: 3,000 X 834 = $2,502,000

Question 4. How likely is it that a photographer would have $2,502,000 to spend on cameras?
Answer:

My math might be off a bit here, but it was a fun exercise.

Don’t kill the messenger, Jerry, but your math is way off. Photos are not 12k in size. 12k is the number of photos. Love the logic though.

Eileen, it looks like you'd be using less than 1/2 the storage space of that drive.

Pure UHH. Ignoring accuracy (and common sense) and taking a guess.

Just highlight all your picture folders, right click to choose "Properties" for a grand total.

Can anyone estimate the amount? I have about 12K raw images. Will they all fit?

You'll need to find the size of the files as a start, but I feel confident they will all fit unless they came from, say, a Hasselblad H6D-200MS camera.

Keep in mind, that English may not be the poster's primary language.

Have to be honest here, while words such as, acoarst, thaz Howard, verrrrrry, and the suchlike look "cute" written down, and may make the author feel special /smart/unique, they oftentimes make what is a helpful and knowledgeable reply to a question, difficult to understand. It's a shame because the good and useful advice gets lost or forgotten while looking up "acoarst" for example, (for which of course, no definition exists)! I don't mean to be rude or disrespectful of the author, but sometimes just a straightforward answer would be better.

Q: How many angels can fit on the head of a pin?

A: How fat are the angels?

(How big are your raw files, exactly? A 2TB hard drive is roughly two trillion bytes / 2000 gigabytes / two million megabytes...)

So the answer, as in ALL of photography, is, "It depends..."

Quick and easy! Even simpler, if you have all your photos under "Pictures" in File Explorer, just right click on "Pictures" and go to Properties for the grand total.

Why are there always so many "answers" given on the HOG where what the OP has written is just ignored. This really is so simple it's actually funny.

Eileen wrote (on the first page): "Sure. I’m using the Nikon D610. My goal is to corral all the photos (desktop, etc.) into one place."

I answered, as did someone else, with exactly how to do what she wants, and how simple it is - no guessing, complicated math, or invoking past wizards! Just note the concerned picture file MB total from each pertinent file location, add them up --- Lo and Behold, the Answer she really wants!!! No reason to make it complicated or difficult.

As is so often the case- particularly when dealing with computer methodology- there are multiple means to an end. Personal definitions of 'simple' or 'simplest' are highly subjective, and often more a matter of familiarity than anything else. Your suggestion is certainly simple and effective, as are several others.

My point, really, was that so many here either do not read, or do not comprehend, the parameters laid out by the OP, hence go off on tangents, frequently having little to do with the question at hand!!! Then there are those who seem to revel in unwarranted complexity, rather than seek the simple, straightforward answer.

Have two drives with identical contents in case one fails.

Yes, always keep 2 copies (minimum), preferably in separate locations.

Amen.

And if your image folders all appear on one screen, just high light the batch and the PC adds them up for you.

Is it insulting to anyone to point out that if you hafta open three different locations, you only hafta add up the three totals, easier than adding up many folders in a big long column.

Math has never been popular with UHH. It ranks right "down there" with reading the OP, and with proof reading before sending :-( Cest la vie.
