Here's the one I've been using for the last 12 years. I carry one with me 95% of the time. If I leave my place, it is usually with me. It carries almost everything I need on a daily basis.
I have several. Each is dedicated to a different camera and associated lenses/accessories.
My Nikon F is standing in for the D700 in the photos.
Pros:
Light weight
Durable
Under $40
Washable
Fits under an aeroplane seat (carry on)
Doesn't have an expensive looking label that says Expensive Camera Gear Inside.
Cons:
If you think you need a house trailer for the equipment you carry daily, this isn't it.
It's a Condor Tactical Response Bag.

My Domke F8 bag is still going strong after about 40 years of hard use.
Still in great shape and heavily used.

I have 3-4 bags and a couple of backpacks, all different mfgs.
That said, my normal go-to bag is an old Lowepro Stealth Reporter D300 AW. Fits a large body, 3 larger lenses (including a 100-400 zoom) along with extra batteries, cords, straps, small flash, blower and the ubiquitous Zeiss Wipes.
Backpack for most usage is an older Lowepro Mini-Trekker AW. Fits everything the Stealth bag does, plus an extra body and larger flash.
Both bags appear to be almost bulletproof.

Body attached 24-70 or 16-35 fits in both of the above. Attached zoom does fit in the Mini-Trekker AW.

I was looking for a back pack big enough to carry ally gear when I found this site. Naturally my first post was recommendations for a back pack. The old farts, me included, recommended small bags of all brands and types. Soon after, while talking to a friend, she gave me a back pack that she didn't use any more. On off, on off, on off. And heavy. Good for packing your gear into the car or RV, not for carrying.
Then one day I was in a store shopping for a lens. While waiting, I was watching a clerk and a young lady with a sling bag. In a flash, she pulled it around, unzipped, pulled out what she wanted, zipped, and slid it back. Wow.
I found one. Big enough for the body with my longest lens attached, or not, plus two more lenses and a few accessories. I also bought a fishing vest. Both are very handy.

Agree with Jim70 regarding shoulder bags vs. backpacks. I have a shoulder bag (older ThinkTank) which is really a great bag, but it is not something I'd carry for miles anymore.

Depending on where you are traveling, I’ve tried as much as possible to use a backpack or messenger bag whose label does not scream “high end photo stuff!” Just a thought.

Right now I'm using a messenger bag, plenty of room, no camera logos to attract attention, holds 2 bodies, with lenses and at least 2 more lenses, sometimes a jacket too! Brand name on request, not pushing anybody.

Check out the backpack style bags made by Gura Gear. B&H sells them. I have three of them all different sizes.

For smaller loads, one camera body with lens and maybe two other medium or small lenses, I love my Billingham shoulder bag.

This is a phenomenal backpack bag. It has two separate compartments where I have two cameras, four lenses (two of which are an RF 100-400mm and an RF 800mm with lens caps on), two extenders, one flash, five batteries, two chargers, eight filters, glass cleaning gear, one rain cover, one camera User Guide, ability to carry a mono-pod or tripod on each side and still have one basically empty pocket and an empty small laptop pocket on the back. I love this backpack.

I could not agree more with you and trix Dodie... I have been using the same Lowpro backpack for almost 20 years...Great padded, easy access camera area on the back and a personal item zippered compartment above. Gitzo mountaineer tripod fits PERFECTLY in one of the 2 side water bottle pouches. Could not be designed any better or more durable. This and my Lowepro fanny pack are the endgame.

I've been using the Ape Case brand for more than 10 years. Well built and very easy to customize. I have 5 of them in different sizes for all my cameras from DSLR's SLR's and medium format Bronicas and Mamiya .
