headed off, next week, to a McDonald Wildlife Photography TX bird shoot at Laguna Seca and Santa Clara ranches; anyone been one a Mcdonald shoot, or at either location for shooting? would like to hear comments and suggestions

:) I assumed that since this was UHH, others would assume I mean camera shoot; however, since recent discussions have strayed off as so far as to cover microwaves, I could see why you would have that question

I went to Leguna Seca earlier this month. Bring long and short telephotos along with the your tripod. The raptors blind and ground level may need short telephoto (skip the tripod in the lower blind.) We did different blinds each day. Will be warm in the blinds. Bring a neck gaiter.

You will take many many photos! Have a great time.

Ive been to Santa Clara twice. I used a tripod in all blinds to hold a bigger lens. I had a zoom on a second camera for mammals or birds that came in closer. Its a great place. You will have a lot of images!

I have been to both locations for photo shoots. Both are outstanding. Both have very different backgrounds. Lenses needed will range from 300mm to 600mm. Use fast shutter speeds. Tripods are needed IMO.a second camera with a shorter lens will be a plus especially at the Santa Clara ranch.

Now you're talkin Buster Brown, er, ah, um, Chief. When I saw bird shoot in Texas I immediately thought dove hunting but that won't be until September 1st as I recall. I can wait. I have a neat little Parker Bros. 20 gauge that should be perfect. OK to be honest I have a great many side by sides in 20 to 10 gauge that would work in spectacular fashion.

Be well,

Dennis

Been to both locations several times, though not with the Mcdonalds'. You're in for some excellent photo opportunities.

I just got back two weeks ago from Laguna Seca. You need up to a 400mm or 500mm lens. I took my 180-400mm that has a built in TC to take it to 560mm on my D6 and one of the group was using a 500mm PF lens. My D850 had a 70-200mm on it and I used it HH while the D6 was on a tripod with gimbal. They have chairs so just bring you camera stuff. If you can bring a laptop so you can download and review photos at night at the hotel that is a plus to get all the goody out of your workshop.

You are shooting from 10' to 40' from the birds most of the time. For the Raptors it can range up to 60-100' and I got a sitting scissortail at abouty 150'. There are good BIF shot opportunities on the Raptors: coming in with claws, flying by, taking off. Plan to shoot them at 1/4000s and f7.1 or f/8. I shot manual the whole time and only varied the SS and on the non-Raptors pushed the f/stop to 11 or 14 sometimes for the DOF.

Have a GREAT time.

The reason I open this thread was to find out if it was shotguns or cameras.

The best pheasant dogs in the country. That probably means the world as well. Check out the memorial page for the first dog listed on the dogs page.

Went on a shoot with only my son and a professional photographer guide last May at Laguna Seca. We could not have been more pleased. You will get a chance at birds seen nowhere else in the United States.
