Nikon WILL service gray market gear.... But they do so at the owner's expense. There's no factory warranty.

The problem with Nikon gear is getting it worked on anywhere else, because except for some pretty basic stuff Nikon has a policy of not selling replacement parts. If a shutter or mirror or PCB board is needed, good luck getting it! Those are only available to Nikon's own factory service centers. (Two or three in the US.)

In addition, a year or two ago Nikon "fired" their 15 or 20 "authorized" repairers, so now the only place to get much of the work done is in Nikon's own service centers.
This is no longer true. br br Nikon WILL service... (show quote)

Here is Nikon's response to what you just posted.
ALL UHH members nee to beware of information put out regarding Nikon products, especially lens/camera compatibility and Grey market equipment here on UHH.
"Gray Market Warning
Nikon products that are imported and sold by anyone other than Nikon Inc. USA are considered Gray Market products. These often are genuine Nikon products that were intended for other countries; therefore, they may not meet Nikon’s specifications for US products or perform as expected, and they are not covered by a Nikon USA warranty or eligible for Nikon USA repair service."
"Terms to look for
The majority of Gray Market products are sold online at discounted prices. Look for the following terms, which often indicate that a product is Gray Market.
Why are Gray Market products risky?
Since Gray Market products are not imported and distributed by Nikon Inc. USA, you don’t know exactly what you’re getting."
"Not eligible for repair service
Not eligible for Nikon USA repair service, even if you want to pay for it."
"Nikon Inc. USA and Nikon Authorized Dealers won’t provide technical support, repair or warranty service on Gray Market products. If you suspect you may have purchased a Gray Market Nikon product, please contact the seller or importer for warranty and service information as well as software updates and downloads. Refer to the seller or the warranty cards included with your product for service contact information."

Guess I’ll be waiting and hoping the camera and lens kit eventually becomes available from Nikon U.S.A.

Wondering if anybody out there has gone this route when looking for new equipment. Were there any concerns or inconveniences with the items you received. If you had a problem within the B & H warranty period, was it rectified to your satisfaction. Considering going this route with a couple of U.S.A. items that have been out of stock for a while, but B & H has their import versions available. A camera and lens kit, FYI.

Nikon is a stickler for purchasing through proper channels. They support their dealers. When you go through different channels, you lose 3x. The purchase price is usually not that much cheaper, repairs are not done by Nikon authorized people, and you will take a hit when you try and resell your gray market stuff. Gray market is a lose, lose, lose scenario - zero upside and a lot of downside.

I think if you purchase equipment in another country in a face-to-face transaction Nikon USA will still fix it here, as long as you can provide the purchase receipt that shows it was sold by an authorized retailer. But that may have changed.
