If I had never owned the mk2 version I would still be happily shooting with my original mk1, it was/is a great lens. I actually kept my mk1 for almost a year and often carried two bodies (6D FF and 7DII aps-c) with the mk1 on one body and the mk2 on the the other. I used my Canon 1.4x III extender on both with good results. When I upgraded my FF body to a 5DIV and my Tamron 150-600 G2 the 100-400L mk1, the Tamron 150-600 gen 1 and the 6D all became trade material towards the upgrades.

One of these images was with each of the two versions of the 100-400L - I flipped a coin to decide which to post first, can you tell which one is which?
And the one using the original mk1 is also using the 1.4x III.

If I still used the original of the 100-400L I would be content. Sort of like the difference between driving the top of the line loaded Buick vs a loaded Caddy.

Thanks for the opinion on the lens and the example shots. Appreciate it.
Still debating and looking. i don't want to rush and waste money on a bad decision. I know there are better lenses out there but unfortunately I have a limited budget

Compared to today's options, it is not a great lens for "wildife"......but it is very decent.

It does not take a 1.4X well and does not take filters well. Used ones have mechanical concerns regarding the wear in the push/pull mechanism.

I would look at a Sigma 150-600 C as an option.
.

I would also look at the Canon 400 5.6 prime and 1.4X II as an option but you have to be careful as no IS and no close focus. You can look at many of my postings to see results of the prime. Northrup recommends it highly as do I.
