Hello everyone!

I'm new to this site. I just recently received a Nikon D5100 for my birthday because of my love for photography. I am however new to the digital world. Any tips on how to shoot the night sky, Leonids and Geminids meteor shower in particular? I can't figure out how to leave open the shutter so I can get a few streaks in the sky. Any help/tips welcomed! Thanks!

Windy

I know that in canon cameras there is a feature called b for bulb,,, you just click on it for as long as you want and keep the shutter speed going...I am sure nikon has something like that,, check your dial .
I have used this to shoot the sky and I have gotten amazing shots of the stars moving....

Ugly hedgeHog has a specialty section called Astronomical Photography Forum at http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/s-109-1.html . There, you will meet well-educated star-camera geeks, with whom you can discuss equipment and technique.

"Bulb" is the first setting developed for Camera Obscura. When someone decided to replace a pinhole with a shutter it was activated pneumatically with, are you ready for this? A rubber bulb. All SLR cameras I know of (film and digital) have a bulb setting as do most bridge cameras. P+S tend to be whatever.
