Because it IS a shrew. A Southern short-tail shrew :-)

I caught one in a field, picked it up in my hands, it bit me ands drew blood, I let it go - I was around 10 years old at the the time. This one was a light brown colour
I'd never seen one before and had no idea what it was when I found it walking around in my back garden. They're supposed to have needle sharp teeth though, so I'll bet it could deliver a nice bite. This one's mouth was so small though I don't see how it could do much biting :-)

their teeth are small, but like needles, I bled straight away although I put on a brave face as I with with other 10 years olds, the bite may not hurt much now though I'm older
Well, it couldn't feel too good though :-D

It does look like both of those, but it's a shrew...first one I'd ever seen. Thanks, Wizz!

That nose makes it looks like a baby rat!

Can anybody ID this little critter? It's about 4.5 inches long.
Oh my goodness! If it had been a rat, even a baby, I would have been running instead of shooting :-D No, Aurel, it's a shrew. I'd never seen one before this and haven't seen it since.

I think shrews are carnivores, right? so they dont bother garden plants like moles do! I'm glad it was not a rat! Yuck!!!

I read that this kind mostly eats bugs, etc but will eat a tiny bit of plant material. This one was really kind of cute, and they must not can see too well, because it just went about its business with my dog and me standing right in front of it. I think they must be pretty beneficial to have around. And yes, thank goodness it wasn't a rat of any size!!! :-)

If it is a shrew then it must be tamed, or that play will not come out right, at first glance I was thinking a baby grey squirrel, but looked closer and thought it would be a mole. If it is southern, as I am, then what it eats is grits. Now as you know grits alone have no taste, therefore they must be added to with a variety of things, ie; butter, salt and pepper, gravy, two eggs over easy and chopped up with crisp bacon, or cheese, to go along with fresh fried fish, I have no idea where I was going with this but I have made myself hungry so off to the kitchen.
LOL I didn't ask its name, but I'm almost positive it wasn't Liz Taylor, and it could very well have been poking around looking for grits. Whatever it was looking for it didn't pay me or my dog any mind...just went on about its business looking for...grits :-D
