The last time I looked at a chart of the elements I did not see gas as an element. I'm sure there have been a couple of very rare elements added since I last looked but feel sure gas is not one of them. Having said that, gas must be made up of several elements the two main ones which are hydrogen and carbon. So why can't we just make petroleum by combining elements? We do make synthetic motor oil after all. I'm sure someone will explain why this can't be done, but why can't we figure out some manufactured fuel that will take the place of gas, after all we have over a hundred base elements to work with.
"synthetic motor oil " isn't created from scratch. It's just oil with some added chemicals.
As for making gasoline in the lab:

GASoline is a compound, not an element.
Compounds are made up of various elements in varying amounts.
Only elements are in the Periodic Table.

It is on the periodic table for obvious reasons, largely related to it’s low spouse acceptability factor
Atomic weight similar to gold. (Not to surprising)

Hydrogen and sulfur are elements, but hydrogen sulfide is a <smelly> compound.
If you ignite hydrogen, you can use the exhaust as a mixer

Quite possibly it may require more energy to combine the atoms making it not so cost effective.

They have been able to dissect the human genome with over a million parts, why can't we do this with gas? I'm just trying to understand why we can't manufacture something even if it is not petroleum as we get it from the ground. It seems we can do so much but why are we unable to do this?
