Actually these deer don't verbalize, so they were originally called "Mute Deer"

I know that certain cattle are called Muly because they have no horns. IF I remember correctly, Mule deer have no antlers. Am I wrong about that? Someone will surely know.
Edit. I was wrong. I asked a hunter and he said it's the ears.
Yes, Barb, mule deer are called that because of their mule like ears, Google has spoken.
Their ears resemble those of a mule.
