Planning a trip to Glacier & Yosemite in August. How many days would you recommend for each location?
Thanks for your help.

Yosemite in August? From what I've heard good lock with parking and the crowds. I went beginning of May last year. Was great.
I was looking for job openings in nearby Great Falls after visiting Glacier. At that time, Glacier was not as busy as it has become.
Years ago I spent a lot of time in both - three months in Glacier and three months in Yosemite. I'd gladly go back for more, although the crowds are a lot bigger than they were in 1972 and 73. Spend as much time as you can, and find the places few people go to. I also spent a lot of time in Moab back in the 70's, living and working there for a while. There are still some places I know where there are few people, but so many others have been completely ruined.

My wife and I spent four days in Glacier this last September and stayed in the park. The best thing we did was an all-day Red Bus tour. We saw all the scenic locations with time for photos. If you can reserve this for your first day it will give you a great overview of the places you may want to return to and spend more time. The problem with driving yourself is that most of the parking areas fill up very early in the morning with hikers. If you're staying outside the park you will have to reserve a timed entry to drive into the park. It's a beautiful place.

"We saw all the scenic locations" No you didn't.

You won't get a reservation inside the park in August anymore: selling out a year in advance unless someone cancels. May however: the rod to Tuolumne Meadows does not open until July (or at best midJune). Yosemite is the best place ever, have been there so many times.
I assume something similar will be in effect this summer over your dates:
NEW IN 2021
Glacier National Park is instituting an online reservation system (ticketed entry) for the Going-to-the-Sun Road corridor between the park’s West and St. Mary Entrances from May 28 to September 6, 2021. Visit the Going-to-the-Sun Road Ticketed Entry page to learn more.
August in Yosemite has the dual problem of too many visitors to even find a place to park your car. Buy in advance the tickets to ride the tour buses inside the park. And the other problem is that the waterfalls begin to dry out in July-Aug. The valley floor is 'strange' when even Yosemite Falls is dry and the entire place becomes almost deathly quiet.
I highly recommend early May for more waterfall action and fewer tourists (except on weekends). Watch the weather forecasts as well as the historical ones to have an idea about cloudiness and rainfall days.
I spent 6 days in Yosemite some time back and felt like I saw nearly everything I could. I hike, but not too far, so mostly I was shooting from the road or a parking lot. Two years ago I spent 7 days in Glacier. I planned seeing everything and saw all that I could. I was VERY disappointed in my trip along the Going to the Sun road. (Photographers should never do tours!) The place I didn't spend enough time on was the Canadian section. It's beautiful, but I didn't have enough $$ to pay the entry fee. So I only saw what I could see from outside the park.

Curious, what did you find to be disappointing bout "GTTS"? Crowds perhaps? Did you go w/a tour group?

I went on the Red Bus tour. They arrived over an hour late at my pick-up location. The driver assured me that we would still get the "full tour." But there were several stops where she didn't stop - only drove slowly. It was freezing cold, and she took the top off "so we could stand up to get better views." We ended up getting back to my location over an hour before our designated arrival time. So I got really gipped on tour time! And at most of the stops we were in a position where getting a good photo wasn't possible. I complained to the bus service, but they didn't bother to respond.

So sorry that happened. Yes, being part of a tour is not the best for a photographer. The shuttle is the best option other than driving yourself. You can get on & off at your leisure.
