A couple of local newspapers occasionally ask permission to use one of my photos that they have seen on FB, and I have always said yes - usually with my watermark and they also give text credit. I am starting to think I should have asked for compensation from the beginning, at least a trade for advertising or other barter.
Is it too late to change my policy?

If I'm in a tourist area and someone or a group wants a cell phone picture then they aren't looking for portraiture, they're looking for a memory. I spend a minute or two and I always, always get a warm and grateful response. If I see a family and one parent is taking a photo of the family with a great background I'll offer to take the photo so they can all be in the picture. It's just common courtesy. It doesn't cost me anything and they have a photo to keep. I don't understand how that could be a problem. If they are asking for a professional service for free then that's a whole different issue and it can be educational to help them get over their sense of entitlement.

Back in the 80s I was on a business trip to Germany and staying in an old castle that had been converted to a hotel. I took a walk to take pictures, etc, and saw a couple taking pictures of each other. I offered to take one of them together and they were delighted. We talked, or rather he and I talked, she didn't speak English. Found out they hit a fox on the Autobahn and had a layover while their car was fixed. We swapped home towns, they were from Frankfurt, and I mentioned Lampasas, a hundred or so miles from Dallas. At that her eyes lite up and she said "ah, Da lass". Even then and there she knew about the TV show Dallas and "who shot JR". A nice visit and they had a picture of them together , we had a nice visit, and it didn't cost either of us anything except the time.
Well, I don't see any big issues. Sometimes a simple, clear, strap something, try this, seomthg I learned from my younger days in Brooklyn:
"Get out of my F****** face before I kill you"111
That will usually dissuade them from any further requests!
It helps if you can contort your face to look like a crazed axe-murderer- I have no problem with that because that's how I look when I get up every morning. I try not to look at the clock- it may stop and begin to run backward!
Well, now y'all knew what I moved out of Brooklyn!
Come on folks, some of you- get a sense of humour. Be nice to folks and you may be surprised how nice some folks are in return! Not everyone is out there rip you off, get you to work for nothing, and make your life miserable- just a few!
Me? I just move along and take everything in stride. Just to prove that, here's a picture of me, on the way back to the office after meeting with my accountant and writing a check for the business tax on the studio!
While I am still able I help people whenever the opportunity comes up. Doing so makes me feel good and in a few years I will be the one asking for help.
Asking a professional to provide a professional service for free is rude.
If you are an amateur photograher and don't earn a significant percentage of your income from photography, why not just accommodate or indulge fols who ask you to take their picture- no big deal. It could be fun! If, you are business-oriented, like me GO FOR IT. Here's a gu withte right approach, he makes his living from photographing folks on the street. All y need is a camera and a street vendor's permit! The might be a market in your neighbourhood. Maybe a sandwich sign with your rates?
Growing up I remember singing the refrain to the song “ Make me a blessing”.
It went something like this:
Lord, make me a blessing to-day,
A blessing to someone, I pray;
In all that I do, in all that I say,
O make me a blessing to-day.
What does it take for someone to snap a couple shots…2 minutes of your time. Just think, you were a blessing to someone who will remember you each time they look at the picture you took. No it wasn’t professional but your time and the results were appreciated.

I am glad I don't have to deal with a professional photographer.
As a physician of 50+ years, I have never and would never have a license plate or other ID on my car indicating my profession. Back when I made house calls, some people would be looking for drugs in your car. They may think you are rich and look for anything to steal. Yes, there was a day when police would give a doctor a break for a minor infraction but those days are long gone. Perhaps the reverse. Nowadays an accident might be staged because they figure you have good insurance. It's sad, but anonymity is preferable. As an amateur photographer, I always take a picture with their phone if requested, making sure they know I am not a professional. Just about any photo is better than none.

I see your point about not having those MD plates. I don't make house calls and even a thug with a double digit IQ would see that POS Hyundai and know I am not rich
That’s great if that works well for you. I’m glad. I’m a bit more giving just because I like making people smile. If someone wants a portrait for framing I charge for what that involves. I’m not starving yet and I’ve made some good friends. I think I’ve achieved a good balance.
