Greg, using the focus bracketing program in the camera, you will want to use set the lens to automatic focus so that it will focus through the subject. I manually set the position of the first shot a tad closer than the closest part of the subject that I want in focus because it is sometimes difficult to determine the exact closest part of a complex subject. It is easier to determine that on a computer screen in Lightroom afterwards and omit the first slice or two from the stack of nothing is in sharp focus.

rgrenaderphoto I'm totally loving your epic wide angle panorama of Death Valley...
Breathtaking compostion... Stellar acuity! Beautiful and vibrant color harmonies latent within...
You are truly a master of your craft sir.

Albeit your EXIF data shows it was captured with the superb AF-S 16-35 mm f/4 Nikkor at 16mm (f/9) not the consumer grade 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6 VR. I shoot the 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6 VR and it's just not in the same league.
Enough said...

Wishing you all the best on your epic journey Robert.

Greg, if you Z works like my D850, you absolutely must have the lens and camera set to auto focus, as it is that autofocus mechanism that is used to advance the focus for each successive exposure.

That is what I figured. I was just wondering when shooting a subject and finding the closest focal point.
