When I worked for a department store, one of our training sessions included the narrative of a high school girl that wore just a rancoat into the store, then outfitted herself from the skin out with several layers of clothing. Another session dealt with how and where people could stash their "purchases" about their persons.

One problem with stealing is what happens when an employee sees a "theft"? While the customer is inside the store, you can't assume they're stealing. When they leave the store, is an employee supposed to chase them and get into a fight? My son works in Lowe's, and they have told their employees not to get physical with anyone. Aside from possible lawsuits, the employee could be seriously injured.

The only solution to preventing theft is electronic security and security guards. That can be expensive.

Sorry Mark, but if you are earning $10-12/hr, porterhouse shouldn't be, um, on the menu.

That’s exactly why it is sad!

From what I've seen lately, if I want to be guaranteed to get a good steak, I have to pay $20/lb. That's why I don't by steak.

Yup! Seems to be the price. Best deal is Costco Prime Strip Loin. Great quality, but still very expensive and one cannot just buy 1 or 2.

Yea, I think the last time I picked up fillets they were about $30US for two 4 ounce cuts.

That’s $60 a pound? Really?? And I thought $30.99 a pound for grass fed organic fillet mignon here in the San Francisco Bay Area was pretty high. BTW, I can get that same pound in Oregon for $12.99.
Go West, young man!

Big difference, eh? (it was actually $27 and some change. But they were good!)
Worse in some areas of Canada from what I hear.

It is very sad!! On the other hand, how would you feel if you earned $10 - 12 an hour and had to buy a week's to food to feed your family? Poverty is not pretty!!
Just looking at the other side, where many others reside.

Mark, I know you are not condoning shoplifting or even poor people buying expensive cuts of meat.

I AGREE with with your statement that the lower income folks, who most often are working extremely hard, are having a challenging time meeting basic living requirements today.

in the supermarket this morn I went to the butcher section, not the pre packed meat, and asked for steak.2 porterhouse,(EXPENSIVE.!)

The man wrapped them and asked if I had more shopping to do in the shop. I said " only three more items" He said when I had finish I could collect my steaks. OK...

He then walked me to the checkout lass, handed her my meat and told her it was mine. When I questioned this he told me he had to do that. shop rules, as people were stealing the meat...putting the package in their clothing and just paying for a few other items.

Nothing new, caught a shoplifter doing that years ago. Steaks down front of pants. Amazing how many shoplifters want to pay for it after they get caught. To late. Was $250 fine back then in the '80s

Our CVS drugstore does the same with batteries, electric toothbrushes and other high priced items. Same problem apparently.
