I've been on six photo safaris to Africa, and the best tip I can
give you is to take a pillow case on your vehicle trips and use it
to cover your camera when not in use. I learned this from a safari
leader who had made tours for 23 years.

Very long flight. I flew from Los Angeles to London, then from London to Johannesburg. Brutal!

I would like to add one more suggestion for your travel planning.

On my trip to Tanzania, I booked a couple of days layover in Amsterdam to help adjust to the time change from Seattle-about 9 hours if I recall correctly. Then after the nine hour flight to Arusa, I was ready to go with no sense of time lag.

So if you go it all in one leg, I suggest going at least a day early before your safari begins.

JFCoupe is right! If you can arrange a layover halfway through (Frankford, Dubai, London) you will be glad you did. I have done it both ways; breaking up the trip is a lifesaver.

Thanks to DebAnn I have booked a 15 day safari. Will leave sfo on 3/3 and return on 3/20. The trip i booked is very close to my dream trip. 14 days with 2 game drives per day and only 5 photographer on the trip.
Everything had a down side and mine is a 21 hour flight.

Enjoy your trip.

question...we considered this but it was in the winter so there were going to be winter clothes brought to europe and of course summer-ish clothes to SA...meaning more packing of clothes. How was that handled...because we would sure like to break it up like this as well...maybe stop over in Amsterdam.

We have been to 6 of the 7 continents But our trip to was Africa was the best. (that is after 12 journeys to France and Italy. If you can visit Monkeyland and Addo Elephant Park. SA is a magical place. The animals and the people are beyond belief. Imagine penguins in a land of lions and diamonds, but with great food. Capetown is well worth the visit, but get your tickets to Robbin Island now, don't wait until you arrive.
