I am not a birder, but captured this pic in So California. I have tried various web sites trying to identify this bird and one software app. Only things I can come up with is a California Scrub Jay or a Lazuli Bunting (never heard of it before).

Any ideas? This is being submitted for a photo evaluation so I need the bird ID.

Any help will be appreciated.

As far west as California? This was in a arboretum so it is possible they imported them or something?

Over the years, I have seen and photographed all sorts of birds that aren't supposed to be here in Montana, a couple even from South America. Thing is, they have wings, and no one to tell them the rules!

I think it is the Western blue bird and not the eastern since the eastern bluebird has more red on the throat. We have lots near me in Northern California.

You might want to get the bird app called Merlin (it ID your bird as Western bluebird without any problem). It is free and can even identify birds by recording their songs:
