Canon Shutter Counts

I have been searching in vain for a shutter count app for Windows (I have Windows 10 OS) that will provide a shutter count on a 5D Mark II, 5D Mark IV, 1DX Mark I and Rebel T7i. There are a couple of seemingly great apps for Mac users, but there are a lot of defunct/shady links when I search for Windows apps. There HAS to be something out there for accomplishing this! I searched UHH, but found nothing relevant. EOS Info....nope, EOS Count...nope (doesn't cover all of these cameras), Shutter Count..nope and the list goes on. I would like to sell a couple of Canon bodies, but the first question a prospective buyer wants to know is the shutter count. I don't mind paying for an app, but I need it to do what I need it to do! Any words of wisdom out there? I know this has been discussed on UHH before, but I was not able to locate a useful link.

With each new DIGIC processor generation, Canon changes how / if the shutter count is stored internal to the camera such that a third-party app can access and display that information. I believe most of your EOS models are supported by this freeware: EOS Digital Info

https://sourceforge.net/projects/canon-eos-digital-info/

I use it for my EOS 5DIII (DIGIC 5+) using Windows machines connected to the camera via the USB. Anyone that tells you they can obtain via the JPEG is showing their lack of technical knowledge of recent EOS technology.

Thank you, chg_canon! I downloaded that app and tried it out on six (6) different Canon cameras. Here are the results:

Successful: Rebel T5i, 60Da, 5D Mark II, 1DX Mark I
Unsuccessful: Rebel T7i & 5D Mark IV

That's 4 more results than I had been able to achieve before! It appears that the "newer" models store this information in a different manner.

As big-guy suggests in the following post, I downloaded freeshuttercount and attempted to run it against the 5D Mark IV and Rebel T7i, both again unsuccessfully. HOWEVER, freeshuttercounter DID recognize the 5D Mark IV, but said I needed to update the firmware before it would work. So, I will do that and try again on both apps.

Thank you both very, very much for chiming in. I appreciate your help!

Good to know. If / when I update my EOS model(s), I'll consider adding www.freeshuttercount.com to my toolkit.

Well, perhaps you guys have had better luck than I have. I even opted to pay for the full Premium Version. Paid for it, then sent me the License key. Copied and pasted it, then informed it was the incorrect license key. Go figure.

Actually, it does work. They used a 'second' email address I use only for security. But register the license on that email address and the software works. I have three 5DII bodies, and the low numbers were impressive.

Any of them work for the T8i Rebel?

So I'm curious, when I take a picture and view it in the camera, I hit info button and in the upper right hand corner there is 100-1075. The next shot reads 100-1076. Why wouldn't the last shot I take reflect the total numbers of camera actuations? I haven't tried a different card so I'm not sure if it resets with a different card. I believe I have the file numbering system set to continuous. Thanks for your help.

If you had one card, that you never reformatted, you just might be able to infer from 112-8075 that the shutter count is 12*9999+8075=128,063. You can never use video as that opens the shutter, adding +1 to the count, not reflected in the still-image count.

But, all bets are off after you have more than one card, reformat your cards and / or shoot video. A better approach to hope is to read the actual value. If you were buying a used camera, would you want the prior owner's best guess or an actual reading from the camera?

Thanks for the response, that helps. The card does make a difference.
