I've had several puzzles made from photos from Amazon. Most were 1000 pieces and the size was 16x20. I've also had a few done for my grand children to do, They were 98 larger pieces for a 16x20 size. I think that you can select the number of pieces you want and the final size of the puzzle.

Here's a company that I used a couple of years ago - portraitpuzzles.com. They made very nice puzzles from two scenes that I sent them online. Their websites shows many options and the turn around was very quick.

If you want to go high end then check out Stave puzzles. You can specify puzzle shapes for individual pieces, etc. But they are expensive! Some amazing trick puzzles. https://www.stavepuzzles.com/custom-jigsaw-puzzles/

I had two made for my granddaughters at Walgreens. One was for younger kids and the other a "regular-sized. They both came out quite nice, printed and in a tin within 24 hours, picked them up at the local Walgreens and got 50% off (or about $12 to $15 each). I was quite pleased with the results and the kids loved them as they were each the subject of each puzzle/photo

My experience with wooden jigsaw puzzles dates back to 1943. My father and I would glue photos onto a piece of flatwood. With an old jigsaw we would cut it up into a variety of shapes which we could put back together. Never got more than about 30 pieces. Still fun in the war days.

I have had about 40 puzzles made. After trying 3 companies, by far the best is PORTRAIT PUZZLES in Wisconsin.
They do a great job! The girl that answers the phone is named Ashley. She will tell you anything you want to know.
You can also identify the photo & they will put it on the puzzle. I am on the Sea of Cortez right now, so I don't have
the phone # with me.

If you use Microsoft JigSaw, you can see how your photo works as a jigsaw played on your computer. This app is free. There may very well be a similar app on Apple.

Online jigsaws don't end up with lost pieces.

I have made a few but they were all low piece count for children, --and they worked very well.
Lots of people on line can do it for you, and most allow you to pick both size and piece count.
Many have a fixed selection of over-all sizes which may or may not match your aspect ratio, so preparing a file to the right size helps.
Re number of pieces, once you get below 1" per piece the pieces are pretty small, though I've seen puzzles with smaller pieces. So if you want easy to handle pieces you can estimate 500 +/- sq. inches for 500 pieces.
I have seen 1000 piece puzzles that are 24x36 finished--- that's 864 sq in. so the pieces are between 3/4" -1"

Not all pictures are equal for puzzle purposes so think about pictures with large areas of sky .
But it is all a personal choice.
I am not a puzzle person myself, I did them for a young grandchild. I took a picture of my Pegboard full of tools (which he likes) 16 x 20 in size, and only 48 pieces for the first one, later went to 96, but he is 5.

yeh, & I have used them to put family photos on coffee mugs. good outfit & when you get on their mailing list they keep running specials. They put photos on all kinds of things and do quite well. Check 'em out. I think they could put a photo on the oil slick of the Queen Mary...

Look at Wentworth Puzzles in England for high quality wooden puzzles from simple to difficult (15 to 750 or 1000 pieces). Not inexpensive, but high quality with many uniquely shaped pieces (some quite tricky). These are heirloom gifts that are likely to be passed down - so I use images that I hope my great grandchildren will put together one day long after I'm gone and maybe even dream a little dream of me. I never thought of signing them, but you've given me an idea. Thanks!
