Hi Brian, I just got the 14" M1 Pro with 16gb memory and 1tb ssd. My use is pretty much the same as yours. There are no memory issues at 16gb with multiple files open in Lightroom and photoshop, creating HDR's or stacks, big psd files with many layers, etc. The computer is fast and a pleasure to use. In reality the processor is more than I can really use but I like it. Build quality is great, the speakers are pretty impressive too!

I replaced my old late 2010 MacBook Pro 15" with this. I have a late 2015 27" iMac with 32gb memory and a 1tb ssd, the new laptop runs circles around it. I am going to probably retire the iMac and just set up a dock for the new laptop to connect to keyboard mouse, Wacom tablet and a monitor or two.

Then it will be my only computer (well maybe, lol). I have 15tb of network storage that I use for my photos.

I went with the 14" for ease of travel, a little bit lighter.

Thank you for your input. Think I’ll pull the trigger after the holidays

I have a 14” M1 max with 64 gb ram and 2tb drive on order right now. I’ll let you know when it comes in how awesome it is :-)

I’m currently using a 2018 mbp with 32gb ram and 500 gb drive.

Hey, Clint, It's probably more power than you need. Enjoy it! I have a 16GB/1TB MacBook Air and find it all I need for now.

How did you get 32 gb ram in a 2018 mbp? I thought they maxed out at 16?

It’s also my work machine too, so I’ll occasionally push it to the limit when opening up/working with large building footprints from CAD/Revit/Revitzo or when doing 3d renderings. Also, since our design office doesn’t upgrade every year, it’s important that it has more processing power now, so in 4 years it’s still working efficiently for us.

It was the first year for that.

Things are a bit backed up order wise, it’s sounding like we won’t get our new machines until the first week in January.

It's probably sitting in a container somewhere off the CA coast...

Probably, but our office also wasn’t quick to order them (dozen of them). They just needed them to be paid for this year and weren’t too concerned about when they would arrive.

Finally got some time to run a benchmark.

I took a program that I developed last year on the PC and ran it on the MacBook M1 chip. The program takes a set of jpgs derived from a tif and compares them to the original file. The image is 3350 x 2550 or 8.5 Megapixels so it has to do the comparison 8.5 million times. It finds the difference between the pixels and finds the average difference and standard deviation, so there's a lot of computation going on. The program was run 32 times and the time it took was recorded.

PC from about 2015: 2479 seconds, 77.47 seconds/pass
MacBook M1: 793 seconds, 24.78 seconds/pass

MacBook/PC speed: 3.12

Note that this is for a specific program so there could be differences between this program and others. I used the same data so that shouldn't affect the results. One difference could be the number of background processes running in the two machines. The PC has been around for a while and has collected a large number of background tasks that could increase the time needed for the program to run. The MacBook started up just after Christmas 2021.
