I have been in manufacturing since High School almost 50 years ago, and have been concerned about this trend for a long time. How do you have a domestic gross national product, without a product? We can't all be engineers or service providers. BTW China produces something like 10 engineers to every 1 in the US. I unfortunately have been involved as an engineer in transitioning a few of our products to China. The political or regulatory process is incredibly easy, at least to have something made there. Not so the other direction. We wanted a specific USA made component used in our product. A small subassembly of a large product. They first had to research to see if there was an equivalent component made in China, if so, they had to use it and could not use an import. This struck me as shrewd, intentional and intellegent policy making on China's part, to, maybe unfairly, protecting their economy. Where as here in the US our political leadership has had such short sighted vision or none whatsoever, for our economic future. As I've said for a long while now "The problem with politics is too many politicians. ". (Brave Heart). Every country needs people who are competent in their respective field helping to craft public policy. I'm all for a free economy, but each country has got to look after their economic future in fair and responsible way.

Outsourcing America's manufacturing in itself has been one of the largest contributors to social decline. Jobs, both skilled and unskilled, are the backbone of a community. Jobs contribute to building a family. Families build communities and communities provide the means to help and care for those that cannot care for themselves. Businesses thrive in communities where jobs are located.

Here's some "food for thought". America and its allies were able to quickly convert their manufacturing to support the WWII war effort. With our heavy manufacturing mostly gone now, I suspect that if we need to gear up fast for a large war effort that we will need to get our needs from Amazon or on eBay for China will most likely be the one that we will be at odds with.

We have a Cusinart toaster, and it is going strong after at least 8 years of use. I am sure it was in the $25-$30 range.

One other comment re the original post. China did not steal all the manufacturing work from the US. US corporate executives made decisions to move production to China for the obvious lower cost of labor. China may have used 'chamber of commerce' type efforts to promote their low cost labor, but lack of manufacturing in the US today has to laid at the feet of corporate executives.

China does have an extensive espionage campaign to steal high tech trade secrets--saving them years or decades of costly research to bring such products to market. But low-tech products are also part of the Chinese economy and US and European companies have been enticed to purchase products made throughout Asia (not just China) to survive in a competitive price market. Since labor costs are a major portion of the final cost of manufactured goods, you should blame the consumer, not the corporate leaders. If American consumers were willing to pay a higher price for American made goods, then Zenith, Admiral, GE, Westinghouse, Philco, Magnavox, Motorola, Curtis Mathes, Sylvania, and Emerson would still be making televisions in America. They aren't, so they don't.

I don't blame American laborers for wanting higher pay than workers in other countries throughout Asia, but that has consequences. So, don't blame management for labor pricing itself out of the consumer products market.

There is a camping toaster for about $3.00 that unfolds and sets on a burner. Camping stores. My Toaster Oven works good for that and more versatile.

I went online researching toasters for a replacement. Thank you China for corrupting our small appliance industry. I spent over a hour trying to find an acceptable toaster. All of them had poor reviews. Unless I'm willing to spend over $200 anything I buy will be in the trash in about a month. Cuisinart, GE and other recognizable brand names are all guilty. My intentions are not to rant, but just have toast in the morning. Sadly there is no longer a quality toaster to be bought without spending a crazy amount of money, and that's still not a guarantee. Any suggestions?

I've got two oldies that toast only on one side at a time, then you flip it out turn it around and finish. They still work great, leftovers from when I was a kid. Now they call them antiques.

I use the old mount to the wall can opener. Screwed to the wall in the pantry next to the counter in the kitchen. We had a really hard time finding a replacement when it broke a couple years ago. Had to order one. Couldn't find one at the hardware store.

When my old toaster died, I purchased...and subsequently discarded two "highly rated" models that either took 5 minutes to toast a piece of bread or toasted each side completely differently. We ended up with an Italian SMEG 4-slice model that's not especially fast but browns both sided very evenly. This, after many, many hours of Internet searching. In fact, I spent considerably more time researching a toaster, than I did a new car I was purchasing at the same time.

What is so amazing is this is the same conversation going on in a different thread about cordless power tools on this site. The answer remains the same...Pawn Shops, but you can add Salvation Army Stores. Either will have older units, but new/modern items for pennies on the dollar. Just have to go into these places and look around and save large amounts on items.

I bought a whirlpool gold microwave 16 years ago when we built our home. It has a built-in toaster next to the microwave. It all still works great. We have looked for a replacement just in case and cannot find a microwave with that feature anymore.

You must have gone through WW II! I got a P38 in the Boy Scouts and still delight in having one, but at 73 I don't do camping anymore, I payed a whooping buck for mine, I understand that GI's had so many they cursed them from the C-Ration boxes! LOL!!!
