Upcoming Smithsonian Visit

Planning on a trip to Washington DC and will be hitting some of the Smithsonian Museums (Flight, Space, and Natural History for sure), and I really want to take only one lens so I don't have to mess with carrying a lot of gear. I usually carry around my 28-300, but I also have a 24-85. Nikon D750, so I can crop if necessary, but do I need the extra reach?

I’d take the lens with the widest maximum aperture. I doubt you’ll need the 300 very often.

IMO 24-85 is a better, sharper lens than the 28-300. Also smaller and lighter. I have & use both, would take the 24-85 for sure.

24-85 on a FF camera will do well.
28mm might be a bit too long inside.

Been there many times when stationed in Maryland. If I remember right there are 13 different buildings making up the museum. You will need a lot of time to see them all, but I admit I have no interest in some of the genres and haven't seen all of them. In the ones I have seen I didn't see any need for reach beyond a short telephoto. Certainly not 300mm. Don't miss the gem and mineral and natural history buildings!

Thank you, everyone! Since I have never been to one I wanted to make sure the shorter zoom was the better choice.

Thanks. I know a lot of places don't like flashes, so was not even going to bring it.
