Looks like you had a very enjoyable and productive day, Elliot. Enjoyed them all.

Thanks, Dave - went with another UHH photographer and it was very enjoyable.
Interesting. Pied avocet is new to me. And none of the (few) web sites I looked at showed any sightings in North America. BTW from the coloring they do look like Pied and not American avocets. Curious.
Great captures. Last time I was there, a couple years ago, we got out of the truck and were attacked by green head flies. Thanks for sharing these photos.

Apparently they are American Avocets, not Pied. See my response to Juy, above.

Thanks, Fred. I've been there a few times and never saw those nasties - I have seen them on Cape Cod and other beaches.

👍. I hadn’t remembered the white on the American’s wing being as prominent as it appears in your pix. Wonder what other differences there are between the two types of avocet.
Expertly taken fantastic series.
I hate to burst your bubble on the Pied Avocets. That species occurs in Europe and Asia. What you have here is the American Avocet in their winter plumage. Believe me - if those had been Pied Avocets, I and hundreds of my birding friends would have been there!
The pictures of them, as with all of your pictures are really excellent.

I went to Bombay Hook on Monday - an absolutely beautiful day. I saw two new-to-me birds: Pied Avocets and a Brown Thrasher.
The drive was surprisingly easy (around 1.5 hours). Bombay Hook is a drive through and you can pull over and spend as much time in any spot as you like. There are also a few foot trails that are short - the longest is 1 mile. I found the Brown Thrasher on a very short trail (less than 1/4 mile) and it seemed curious about me - it didn’t fly away and gave me many poses! A very enjoyable day!
