Gene is on a roll this morning with great answers for those who choose to learn! Be sure you are in continuos focus and holding the back button down while simultaneously firing the shutter. I ran across a photog new to BBF once who didn't realize releasing the button set the focus plane and the camera held that point until pressed again. This may not be your issue, but your post seems to indicate a slightly flawed technique.

Thanks mileroetex, From what I've heard so far, it maybe my settings. I've got the BB working ok and many of the photos are good and I'm trying to figure out 'why'.
Thanks again, Rich

I just sent you the PDF. Look at the section about BIF. Also look at the images next to focus points.

Make sure your camera is in AI Servo mode. Also, take a look in your AF menu settings and see if your particular camera has further options for case, speed, etc…

Thanks TriX, will check that out

I leave my camera in AI Servo ALL THE TIME. If I'm shooting a still shot I merely take my finger off the button and then shoot. If the subject it moving I keep my finger on the button so it can constantly focus while the subject moves.

Thanks foathog,

If your particular Canon has AI Servo tracking options in the AF menu, you might shoot Chg-canon a PM on the settings he uses. He is the most knowledgable member I’ve found on Canon AF tracking settings.

BBF takes a bit to get used to, but not a year. Anyway, are you using servo focus and continues shutter? In that mode, you have to keep the BBF depressed while following the subject and shooting. I find that shooting at a higher shutter speed, at least 1/1000 will stop the action. BTW, I have the Tamron 18-400 and it is not soft beyond 300mm, though at 400 it seems a wee bit soft.

Hi Willaim: I think I've been shooting at too low shutter speed also. I've heard comments on UHH that the lens is soft over 300mm but I'm really happy with the lens.

Ion. quote=Rich475]I have been trying to learn BBF for about a year now. The biggest problem I'm having is shooting birds in flight. I have a Canon t6s and an 18mm-400mm lens. I'm using Manual but would Aperture or Shutter priority be better?
I always shoot with plenty of light, morning or afternoon, one-shot, 19 pt AF. shutter speed??? I have heard this lens is soft above 300mm and I have not gone higher than that. I have good results on anything not moving. Any help would certainly be appreciated.

I usually use Shutter Priority when shooting birds in flight. I generally try to keep the shutter speed at 1/2000 or 1/2500 of a second to stop blur and ocassionally if I feel I need it I will raise the speed higher. I normally start out with ISO 100 and raise it a little if I need to. If the light starts to vary a lot I would put ISO in Auto.

I like to use one point focus and 1/2000 sec letting the iso go automatic. This system has giving us the best results. Also AI mode can be used. Keep on practicing
You will get it .

Hi adedeluca, All good suggestions and I will give it a go.
Thanks, Richg

Hi jamesl: I generally always have good light so I use auto ISO. I definitely will increase my shutter speed
Thanks, Rich
