Honestly, some of the new gear can do things the older stuff could not. Without question, the studious and artistic photographer can create images that many of us can only dream about, and all while using more primitive gear. However, a camera with IBIS and lens stabilization can sometimes lead to images that older gear cannot achieve. High pixel counts can make larger images, or acceptable images from small cutouts that are not available from low count cameras. RAW files can SOMETIMES lead to PPd images that are unreachable with jpg stuff. Doesn’t massively higher ISO sensors with low noise improve the variety of images available?
One of the best parts of stabilization has been the diminished need for a tripod! I never knew a serious film photographer who could get along without one, and I find I still need my tripods when I shoot film.
Just as a surveyor works faster and more accurately with a laser than with older sight based equipment, just as a cabinet maker words faster and more accurately with a power saw and planer and sander than with hand tools, so the photographer can ease and improve their work with more capable tools. Do you know a machinist that works without CNC machine tools?
Yes, the job can be done well with older stuff, but I choose to learn to use the best that I can afford, and I believe my images show the improvement! So will yours, if you take the time and effort to use it from a technical standpoint, but you can never forget light and composition and being in the right place at the right time!

I'm at a crossroads with my gear. I'm waiting for the Lumix GH6 to be released. If it has enough new features, I'll get it. Otherwise, I'll probably get a GH5 Mark II, introduced this year. I'm also waiting to see whether the Lumix G9 will be updated to a G10. I have a place for it on my copy stand...
