This is my preserved Yellow Jacket that I staged for a focus stacking session using the 85mm 1X-5X macro lens that I've used on other recent posts. I stage the subject and dial in the amount of magnification to fill the frame with the subject.
I have found the sweet spot of the lens to perform best at f/5.6 and I set the shutter speed and exposure compensation using the histogram so it varies from session to session. The illumination that I use is constant lighting from three LED desk lamps diffused with vellum tracing paper rolled to create a light tunnel to surround the subject in even soft light.
Best full insect shot I have ever seen. Kudos. Composed beautifully too.

Nice image Gary.
Thanks, Brenda. I'm doing a series of full-body images as a break from the magnified face views.

Thanks, Tinusbum. I'm playing with several of the toys in my toy box and this was the 85mm 1X to 5X lens.
Thanks, Napabob. I used the "Chinese" version 85mm f/2.8 1X-5X macro lens for this one which is an alternate for us, non-Canon users. It has its advantages with one of them being that it sells for $500. According to its specifications, it has APO glass and it is near telecentric. The working distance is quite amazing and far more than any other optic that I use. It is also a fully manual lens that poses no issues for tabletop sessions in the way that I use it. I've found that f/5.6 appears to be the sweet spot for my work with constant illumination.
