I just got a warning from my D7200 that the card in slot 2 may be damaged and to replace it. I did some experimenting, switched the cards around, one card, both cards, couldn’t get it to repeat the warning. Both cards work fine. I’m thinking that the card in slot 2 wasn’t seated all the way. Your thoughts?

I think you are most likely correct. However, there could also be a slight bit of debris in the slot keeping the connection from being made. I'd check both slots for that.

One other thought, except for the really big ones, cards are inexpensive. You won't get a second chance at some photos.

More than likey the contacts were dirty on the card. Take some alcohol and GENTLY clean them off with a Q-tip are a paper towel. Nothing abrasive however as these are exptremely thin contacts and easy to damage.
I have a D7200 as well and I download my images and videos to an external HD. The price on these is dropping (Micro Center has a 2TB drive for ~ $80) and it a quick and safe way to protect your work.

Yeh, I think I’ll get a couple new cards. I’ve used these like forever. 16 gig are plenty big for me. I always download to an external and then reformat the cards in the camera.

I believe there has been disagreement here about what I'm about to say, but you said used forever so: 1. Cards I believe can build up a residual charge until they just won't accept new data, a lot of rewrites I'll admitt, but just mentioning. 2. If you've really used the cards a long time and remove for transfer, maybe a contact is getting worn thin.

Just a quick FYI. I run 64 gb cards in my D7200. Great for movies and high pixel photos. No problems and I can shoot a complete wedding (stills on card 1m, video on card 2) and still have room to spare

I use an adapter for the micro cards that way the cameras contacts are almost never used by inserting and removing the card. Only the contacts on the adapter. I used to never remove the cards at all and used the supplied cord to download directly to the computer then reformat in camera. Now I just remove the micro card and reformat in camera. Never had an issue yet.

Since you have two card slots, keep using the questionable one, and see if it works okay. I wouldn't do that with a single-slot camera, though.
