Anything within 500 meters of the car is rarely worth even turning on the camera.

That statement shows a distinct lack of vision-some of my favorite (and most admired) images have been made within a very short distance or my transportation. I find that when I block out most of the 'visual static', and concentrate on the small details, I'm surprised at what I see. That isn't to say that I don't enjoy making images of sweeping scenic panoramas, but I often find those images within a very short distance from my vehicle as well!

I found similar sales. When I query seller they are upgrading to Z models and dumping all older equipment.
If the Z9 meets my expectations, I too will have 2 D850’s, battery packs, and an array of lenses for sale.

The OP did say Nikon and with Nikon it's not a moot point. If the camera or lens is gray market Nikon won't fix it even if you pay.

They even won't supply parts to independent camera repair shops. They are the image making industry's Tesla/Apple! I just came across an article about farmers having difficulties keeping their 'modern' computer-controlled equipment functional when something goes wrong, because the manufacturer won't provide repair parts or assistance through normal channels! Watch our food prices go up!

You know who else gets unique images within 500' of the car?

Yes, you are correct, and that is one of the reasons Canon outsells Nikon. While both companies are in business to make money, being a dick about non warranty repairs is not a good marketing strategy. I do own several 'grey' market camera bodies and lenses, but they're all Canon. All of my Nikon gear was purchased with USA warranty's. Also, I've never had any problems getting repairs for my grey Canon gear. You do know Canon's white lenses aren't actually white. They're light grey.
The last lens I had in the shop for repairs was my Canon EF 28-300L. Canon repaired the lens far, far quicker and for significantly less money than my regular repair shop would have done. That lens was originally purchased for me by my brother, rest his soul, in its country of origin, Japan. Pretty sure that makes my light grey lens, grey market.

Today (10/24), four sellers have a total of six posting for Nikon bodies or lenses, and IMHO none of contain all the information that I look for when purchasing. I have done my share of buying and selling, and I need to see:

1) USA model? Nikon USA only repairs or services products intended for the US market. For bodies, this is easy to tell because the serial number almost always begins with the number “3.” For lenses, sometimes the serial number starts with “US,” but if not, the pedigree needs to be demonstrated with paperwork, etc. To me, repairability is important.

2) photos of actual product, not stock image. A photo of the camera serial number takes care of issue #1.

3) Box? Most postings mention or include photos of the box in pictures, but some leave us guessing.

4) Shutter count for cameras. A must, like mileage for a car.

Pricing is up to you, but you should check with ebay and other sources of used gear to see if you are in the ball park.

Good luck.

I am not selling (or buying at the moment) but how can a person find out the shutter count?

How about a UHH format suggesting it be as complete as possible for items offered for sale? Modify as necessary.
*****************

Manufacturer:

USA or Gray market:

Provide photo of actual item showing box or other pertinent equipment:

Shutter Count or other information:

Best guess as to condition, salvage, poor, fair, good, very good, & Like new:

Price:

Acceptable, cash, check after accepted by bank, PayPal:

*************

Just seems reasonable as some of us do forget what others might want to know, and a standard basic format, as complete as possible would prompt us to provide it.

Sounds like a person should walk or run away from these vendors.

At some point you do because age without quality of life is not something to look forward to.

My wife was a mobile phlebotomist for a large lab company and she made daily rounds at several senior facilities and nursing homes. Often, when the weather was bad, or she had a particularly heavy schedule, I would driver her to the various drawing sites and even help her with carrying her vampire gear in the nursing homes. I have seen, and helped my wife with people who were looking forward to the alternative. Sure, these people were alive and getting older, but many were simply waiting for the alternative, to free them from the lack of life they were living.
My daughter is an RN and she use to work in senior oncology. More often than not, her main function was helping her patients to stay comfortable while they waited for the alternative. Better living through chemistry? I think not.

What I find somewhat alarming is the persistent want of quality marketing imagery in the "Members Buy/Sell/Trade -- Classifieds" form ClarkJohnson. Come on folks this is a photography web site and it is in everyone's best interest to showcase your savvy and skill set in the photographic art & science. Especially when selling your previously owned kit.

Over the years I worked with a myriad of agency fashion models thus I'm a hardcore VOGUE magazine "davante". Their full page and double truck spreads are what dreams are made of for those who shoot commercially. The illumination for makeup product is at a another level. The zenith of advertising!

If you invest time on eBay you will quickly learn that Japaneses vendors offer a suite of 8 to 12 stellar images of the kit item they are marketing. More importantly eBay allows you to view their change log history to see how they are responding to their market dynamics... And like quixdraw said early on "When you check Ebay prices, suggest you look at the sold prices." quixdraw has much business marketing savvy here.

My best friend from college (with whom I'm still in touch) and is incredibly successful once told my his golden rule to success is "Never be in a hurry to Buy or Sell" Words to live by...

And to those who are distraught over the toll age has brought into their current lives... Folks when one door closes look carefully because there is another which has open for you.

Final Thought: There are giants who have gone before us... Ludwig van Beethoven the German composer who to this day remains one of the most admired composers in the history of Western music triumphed over his becoming totally deaf midway through his most prolific years... He never heard one note of his monumental 9th Symphony... When the 9th was first preformed to a thunderous standing ovation he turned to his friend and asked if the audience liked it...

Like the phoenix, rise up to the occasion... embrace what you have and make your best with it.
I've had to close my studio due to the pandemic... My team has moved on... yet my love to the photographic arts remains steadfast and strong... I look ahead to thrive and flourish in despite my failing physical heath... I constantly look to Beethoven and listen to his works written when he was totally deaf...

And yes I hoard those epic AI; AI-S and AF D optics all built with the precision of a Swiss Watch.
Truly a joy to photograph with... I started with manual focus, funny how I again cherish it and I'm returning to same... those hard cold brass lens housing have an such an endearing touch...

Wish all the very best on your journey...
