I think user Photolady2014 had a problem with her 1.4x and 100-400L II that resulted in a repair to the camera. I browsed her topics but couldn't find the specific post. You might ask her directly if that was the case. With two cameras involved, it could be the extender rather than both cameras, but still some examples for other eyes to see (and see the EXIF) might still be the next logical (and free) step.

You should be able to get good sharp images with the lens and extender.
Mine gives excellent results as these two images with the 100-400L mk2 + 1.4x III on a 7DII show, these are actually using the combo in place of a macro lens. The white skipper is just over 1" and the golden one is just under 1".

Thanks CHG_CANON. I’ll try to find her post and pm her for information. I don’t know what can go wrong on the converter but it is a used item. All looks good with it as far as I can see.

I have a canon 100-400L II lens that I use on my EOS R & 7Dii. I purchased a canon 1.4 converter V-III but am finding the images are very soft. (extremely disappointed). I’ve tried upping the shutter speed etc. but still soft focus on all images. The mentioned lens used as is takes perfectly sharp images. Any way to solve this issue?

Have you shot tests with a tripod ?? Are you using a "protective" filter on the front of the lens ? The 7DII can require focus calibration the R does not .... There can be electronics/focus issues within the extender ....
.

I haven’t used it wit a tripod and I don’t use protective filters on my lenses. I’ll have to wait till I get home to do some testing. I’ve only got the R with me now and as I posted I dropped the L to RF adapter and damaged the mounting ring so no more 100-400 for the rest of my vacation. Thanks for your help imagemeister.

I have the MIII converter, designed specifically for this lens and a select few other lenses.
No softness so cannot see what your issue is in this regard.
The first photo is with a 2X converter and 800mm.
The second is with the 2X converter at 200mm.
Both with a 7D
Building was at least 1/4 mile away.
There is no "Softness" as you can see.

Thanks for posting these. Something is definitely going on with mine. I’ll have to have it checked out when I get back home.

Clean all contacts and ensure you hear the click when putting the 1.4 on the lens and camera. Good luck.

I have not read all the suggestions, so this might be redundant. When you can, you can try to manually focus on a subject under controlled conditions. Zoom in on the electronic viewfinder to manually focus to the sharpest focus you can without using autofocus. Use a scene with a series of objects at slightly different distances. Focus in the middle and see if that turns up focused, or if focus was better in front or behind that.
Don't trust the image you see in the camera. Wait until its downloaded to a computer to really judge it.
You may need to calibrate the combined lens and converter.
Its a big ask, but if you have a friendly camera shop in the area you could ask the proprietor to let you try on a new converter in the shop. Or a local camera club might have someone with the same or very similar converter.

Thanks Mark, most was touched on. I’ll definitely do a controlled manual focus when I return home. In the EOS R there is no calibration adjustments. However I will check it on my 7D II.

Have you calibrated the camera with the teleconverter on it?

Currently shooting with canon mirrorless so no adjustments.

I, too, am surprised. I use only my L-series lenses (all three of them), yet I've used the 2.0 tel converter, and I've captured a very detailed image of a castle up high on the hills of the UK. Don't give up.
