Broken SD card

Hi everyone,
I am currently on a road trip in the Grand Tetons. Last night I was trying to process my photos. The photos on one of my SD card (Sony 64GB) would not download. When I put the card back in the camera it said there were no pics, although earlier in the day I had been able to see them when I clicked the view button. Do any of you smart folk know what I can do about this please? I have turned the camera off and taken the battery out and still nothing!

I assume you have a card reader? Can you attach the camera to the computer and try to download that way?

What do you mean they won’t download? Does the computer see the camera or card as a separate drive? If so can you navigate to the pictures and see the file names?

If the computer can’t see them it’s time to use a file recovery software like Recuva. After you download the files then throw the SD card in the trash.

So many questions and possibilities here to begin troubleshooting. But file recovery would probably be the first step I would take, unless you know exactly when the files on the card disappeared.

Were the files in question present on the card when you attached it to your computer? If so, did any windows pop up when you attached the card, beside the normal "What would you like to do with this device" window?

Download and run RescuePRO on the card ASAP. The image fils are likely still there, but the file system has become corrupted for some reason, so the files cannot be seen by the camera or the computer.

There are many other data recovery apps, but I've had the most consistent results, and ease of use, with RescuePRO. Standard version should suffice. They have a free trial of all versions you can run, per their suggestion, to see if helps with your issue.

Bring the card home and work on it there. There are several recovery programs that might work.

I agree with Jerry. Take the card out, keep it safe and wait until you get home to try file recovery. This happened to me several years ago by Mesa Arch with a week's photos on it. Had a worrying 3 weeks before I got home but Sandisk recovery software came up trumps and all photos were recovered. I wish you similar luck.

You might want to turn the card over and inspect the thin plastic strips that separate the contact points. I had a card that my Ma would not read. When I inspected the card I noticed that that thin plastic strip had separated and curled back over the contact point. I carefully clipped it away so all the contact points again made contact in the computer. Just to be on the safe side I retired the card and ordered a new on.

The advantage of doing the recovery ASAP on the road is that if necessary you can reshoot at least some of the images, and you don't have three weeks or whatever of needless anxiety before you return home. Most hotels nowadays have sufficiently robust Wi-Fi to download a recovery program.

I keep RescuePRO on my laptop, which I almost always have with me when on a trip.
